You are right about liveatc.net being very helpful to instrument students. I had listened to it in passing before I started flying but during instrument training my instructor told me to tune in and listen to approach. I think it took me one night of listening to that before I got down the readback instructions for an approach. It really did help to see that no matter the approach, they say pretty much the same thing.
