Photo of the Day (11/06/08)

Fiznatty does it again with today's Photo of the Day. This shot, taken in northern Sweden, just screams winter, doesn't it? He used a 25 second exposure and 'painted' the bath house with a flashlight while the shutter was open.
I like how the northern lights shoot upward above the house, almost as if the heat from the bath house generated the glow. Having grown up in Alaska, I've seen this kind of view a number of times, but I can't think of a better place than Sweden to really experience the aurora borealis.
Nice job, Fiznatty!

What a beautiful photo. I've been a lot of places on this earth, but I've yet to experience a full-blown aurora borealis...one of these days...one of these days...

It certainly helps. It's interesting to note that this picture was taken with a Canon 20D. A camera that I've seen listed on Craigslist for as little as $400 for the body. I'm not sure which lens Max used, though.
That said, it takes a lot of experimenting to get a shot like that. Fortunately, digital cameras make that process much less expensive.
Good luck, Marina. Be sure to check out Karen Walrond's photography blog, "Through the Gadling Lens":

The shot was taken with a 10-22mm lens. I read up a bit on shooting auroras before I went and picked up several tips. Among the most important were: take all filters off the lens (including UV filters) and shoot as wide as possible.
I did switch off and try my 24-70 as well, but the 10-22 was used in most compositions.
There are, of course, several other things I learned during the experience. :) If anyone is planning on shooting the northern lights you're welcome to contact me at max [at] maxwaugh.com or Flickr.
And Kent is right... you don't need to spend a ton of money on equipment for this. I've seen some stunning shots taken with advanced point and shoots, not just SLRs.
