For the economic explanation, meaning the US is so large it costs us so much more to get across any ocean, etc. Sorry, it is a matter of priorities. A ticket from San Francisco to many major European cities is $1000 or less. Most Americans would rather spend that on a large screen TV, sorry it is true.
I started traveling when I was a broke student because it was a priority for me and i was curious about the world.
My parents recently flaked on coming to visit Buenos Aires (where I live now) because 'they couldn't afford it.' A huge lie. They live in a gated community, have 2 late-model SUVs, 2 large screen TVs, a brand new house, and just spent $700 a ticket for the World Series.
They can't afford it? No, they are scared and have no interest in anything unfamiliar.
My dad asked me what language they speak in Argentina! :/ And if the beaches were nice in Buenos Aires. Totally ignorant, sorry.
