Michael Phelps flies Northwest
Another boring flight to the East Coast suddenly perked up when I looked up from my iPhone on Monday's Northwest flight to Baltimore and saw Michael Phelps standing in front of me. Apparently, after everyone had boarded the plane the Olympic swimmer was snuck on to prevent any swooners from interfering.Sporting a Baltimore Ravens jersey and Tigers baseball cap, Phelps quickly darted over to seat 2D, the seat right in front of me and hunkered into the corner -- only myself, my intern and the guys sitting behind me seemed to notice.
Naturally, being the kind, respectful passenger that I am, I kept to myself and didn't raise a fuss. I only spent, oh, about 70% of the flight peering through the seat crack to see if Phelps was smashing atoms with his bare hands or solving the world's economic woes with an abacus.
On pushback, Phelps immediately put away his Blackberry and switched gears to this month's Esquire for about 60 seconds before falling fast asleep. Throughout the flight he only moved a few times to close the window shades before landing in Maryland. Once phones were allowed again he immediately jumped on the line to discuss the six flat panel TVs that were being installed in his place then bolted out the front door on arrival -- before I could get a proper photo.
I suppose as a celebrity you try to keep a low profile when on the road, or else nutjobs like Gadling Bloggers make a big ruckus and try to take your picture. Really I was most surprised to just see him on any old Northwest flight after watching him on television last month -- or as our friend and contributor Matthew Firestone put it:
"I find it hard to believe that Michael Phelps flies in an airplane - I heard he just dives into the open sea and follows oceanic currents around the globe."
Farewell, Michael Phelps. Sorry for taking your picture on the plane, but Gadlingers wouldn't have believed it was you if I didn't have evidence.

How cool that I found your blog after stumbling upon this entry, thanks to AOL's headlining it. Keep up the good work. We'll see you at the barbershop.

Your story, and accompanying photo, is truly creepy.

Well stated. Perhaps one can be forgiven, though, if one is important enough to fly first class and have an intern.

What a complete invasion of privacy- I cannot believe you took a picture of this man while he was sleeping- very rude of you. How would you like it if some stranger snapped your picture while you dozed on an airplane- then posted your picture on the net. Why not just congratulate the man and thank him for making us all proud.

wow u sound like such an ignorant lol...do u mean to tell me that if u were sitting next to THE MICHAEL PHELPS that u would not take a picture...honestly u are in no position to tell this man he was creepy, wrong, or worse than the "paps" until ur in that situation with michael phelps sittin in front of u and ur camera in your hand. u just need to calm down and let people do as they want...and chances are if u feel that strongly about protecting michael...u seem like ur gonna end up a stalker of some celebrity or random person anyways lol..so good luck with that..and mind your own business if u dont know what ur talkin bout..u are way to easily offended..wait no ur probably right im sure michael phelps would be absolutely outraged about such a sly and shady picture :P

Complete invasion of privacy. You should have just congratulate him or ask for a picture and keep it for yourself. It's ok to share your story but not the picture.

Mr. Phelps is now even more an american great. It would be hard to refrain form snapping a picture of him if you see him in public. Can you blame the guy, he was sitting amongst a star.
Pauline Oct 1st 2008 11:45PM
Seriously, this is such a violation of a persons privacy. You are worse than the paps - at least they are in the persons face and they know they are being photographed.
I hope this happens to you. Phelps has every right to privacy...as does everyone.
This is exactly why there is so much hatred of paps! Shame on you!

Pauline,
Obviously you don't get out much or read, but the author did say "Naturally, being the kind, respectful passenger that I am, I kept to myself and didn't raise a fuss". So what if he peeked through, in-between the first class seats? The author was discreet, and obviously, notables do expect some interaction with fans, admirers.
Grant, job well done with the story and pic.

Seen on a flight? What did you expect him to do, - swim?
Jack-a-roo Oct 1st 2008 11:54PM
Is that the guy who won all the gold medals for swimming? If it is, he was a good swimmer
Icanmakebubblesinthepool Oct 2nd 2008 2:31AM
That crappy photo would stand up as evidence in a court of law.
Its truly amazing that a swimmer, any swimmer, is a celebrity.
Icanfartbubblesinapool Oct 2nd 2008 4:36PM
That picture is proof that's Michael Phelps about as much as the ones taken of the supposed "Big Foot" prove there not ones of a man in an ape costume. You couldn't get that admitted as evidence, of being Phelps, in a court of law.Besides, I don't care how many medals he's won a swimmer is just a swimmer. Star struck mf'er.
doug Oct 2nd 2008 3:55AM
Whoa... How in heck can you tell if that is MP in that picture? To blurry. Get rid of the phone and get a camera.. You don't have any proof that you got a picture of him..... I never take a bluff..
Doug Dieter Oct 2nd 2008 8:31AM
He had his 15 minutes of fame. Does anyone care now?
John Oct 2nd 2008 8:47AM
What an absolute SCUMBAG you are! You invade someone's privacy by listening to their private phone call, then 'peer' through seats like a perverted peeping tom? Then you have the gall to post your trash here...get a F'ing life you Moron and respect others' privacy!
Jessica Oct 2nd 2008 9:18AM
Most reporter types are truly invasive and will hassle the famed subject so give Grant a break. Don't tell me you'd not be finely tuned in if you were sitting right behind someone so famous from your hometown.
washarp Oct 2nd 2008 9:08AM
I heard he wears all 14 gold medals at all times
Jrzy Oct 2nd 2008 9:43AM
Id like to see him in my room
