I've tried to get an answer to this matter, but haven't yet. Years ago, on National Public Radio, Theroux appeared before a college audience--and that of national radio--to discuss his works, particularly a trip, by kayak, from Australia to island nations in Polynesia. He professed to land on island shores, to be greeted by royalty etc. Talk of the Nation host Ray Suarez asked Theroux how he was able to travel without incident and meet dignitaries so easily, the reply being "I made it up." He was so cavalier about it, and it came so early in the broadcast that nothing was made of it. Mr. White: do you think this is good? I wouldn't read anything by Theroux after his admission, but have since noted that others have done the same, e.g., Myra Sorvino in her autobiography. To me, it's shameful. To others, apparently Theroux, it's de rigeur.
