It's well worth it. Just avoid Anchorage and Fairbanks for the most part. I spent two weeks with a rental car and a friend driving everywhere we could. It was incredible. Our favorite town which should not be missed was Talkeetna (on the road to Denali.) Also, there is a neat hot springs just outside the arctic circle north of Fairbanks. I still look at the pictures of the trip (6 years ago) and am amazed at how beautiful it is up there.
