Passenger arrested for not turning off his laptop
A 35 year old "well dressed businessman" was arrested yesterday when he refused to turn off his laptop for the final approach of his Qantas flight. The passenger was on board flight QF418 from Melbourne to Sydney and apparently found whatever he was doing on his laptop to be more important than listening to flight attendant requests. Upon landing, all passengers were told to stay seated while the Australian counter terrorist first response force arrived, taking the man into custody.
Witnesses report seeing the man being interrogated by 6 armed police officers in the airport terminal, but he was later released with no charges filed against him.
The only statement Qantas made, was that a male passenger had failed to comply with a captain's directive. Let this be a lesson to everyone; listen to the flight attendant, and turn off your laptop when you are told to. There may be no evidence to confirm that a laptop will interfere with flight controls, but a 4 pound laptop can become a cabin projectile when the aircraft touches down.

As for the passenger that said that it was events like this that kept him from flying, good riddance. I wouldn't want to sit next to him. Airlines have rules for a reason. The laptop could serve as a projectile and kill someone. Why is it that people can't comply to policies anymore? Everyone thinks their right in their own eyes, and their desires are more important than other people's safety.

I refuse to fly and all of these comments can tell you why. What used to be a good experience (before deregulation) has become sheer hell. Why put up with it if you don't have to?

jeff your an idiot. The idea is to limit flying debris increasing chance of sirvivability.
Debbie, my deepest sympathies for your friends family. I've work on DC 10 aircraft and studied the cause of that crash. That problem was fix and can never happen again. I hope that info may help your friends family a little.

What the Flight Attendant should have done is gone in the back and found the 4-5 biggest guys brought them up and put him in a choke hold and cuffed his butt to his seat. I believe they teach this in training now.

Non-college educated??? Excuse me, don't hate because they managed to acquire a job that requires them to work SMART and not hard with an average hourly wage of $46.22. Oh, and by the way some of them, many of them have Bacherlor's degress in Financial Management, etc., traveling to exotic European locations for just $62.00 not to mention sitting in FIRST CLASS for free. Don't hate b/c you are working M-F, 8-5 hoping for some overtime pay to get you through next week.
