A tour of Sarah Palin's hometown: Wasilla, Alaska
If you've come to Gadling to get away from the Sarah Palin media frenzy, tough luck.
Assuming you're a sentient being who's been blessed with eyes or ears, you've probably noticed that America's foxiest governor, Sarah Palin, has been nominated as the Republican candidate for vice president. For the last several days, Palin has been derided as inexperienced by the Democrats, who cite the fact that she was mayor of the small town of Wasilla, Alaska, as recently as 2002.
It was only a matter of time before news outlets infiltrated the 8,500-person town of Wasilla and reported back to the rest of us. Over at Slate, Alex Sheshunoff has compiled a slideshow of the town, complete with photos of all the highlights: the Mexican restaurant, the taxidermist, the city hall, and most importantly, the Target.

What a funny video.
Because I don't like Palin. Apparently neither does the narrator.
N Greve Sep 4th 2008 5:11PM
Wasilla looks a lot different now than in when I first visited it in 1961! I enjoyed the video and sights of the current little city. I think Palen is the best and most exciting person to hit American politics in a very, very long time! She certainly has everyone talking.
Brenda SFO Sep 4th 2008 11:40PM
Why yes, she most certainly has everyone talking! Mostly about her lack of experience, both nationally and internationally, but I digress. As a supporter of Palin though, you might want to check your spelling of her last name before you post.
I could care less if she is a woman - with her lack of experience, I find it terrifying that she is a heartbeat away from the Presidency. I don't vote by my gender, I vote for the best candidate.

She got her first passport in 2007??? This is the woman who will lead our country if anything happens to McCain? Wow! Unbelievable! Funny video though! For the record, I didn't care for her speech last night either. Guess who I'm voting for?..LOL

I have a question that needs to be asked of Sarah Palin. I am a mother of a mentally disabled daughter. I have taken care of my daughter for 35 years! I know how demanding a job it is both physically and emtionally as well as very time consuming.
It is more than a full time job just taking care of the needs of a disabled child. I want to know how she is going to care for her new baby and it's special needs. I question the choice Mrs. Palin has made to accept the nomination of Vice-President over the care of a special needs child!
I admire her for chosing to have her child but
she knew when she chose to have this child that it would have special needs and demand a great deal of care.
It seems to me she is being selfish in wanting to advance her career when she has such a big responsibility she owe to her disabled child!
In demonstrating that kind of selfish judgement, she shows a real lack of responsibility towards her child and family! This makes me question what kind of judgement she would use as Vice-President or President!

you are an insult to women everywhere. would you ask any male president, professional football player etc... this question???? she is a great mother and has a job too. Do some research on her qualifications and find some facts. I'm so damn tired of people talking about her clothes, hair, glasses, ability to mother while in a position of power...you all are just afraid. We in Wasilla are toughand smart. We hunt for our dinner, split wood for our heat and smile doing it.

JFC - that narrator was flat out awful. Not at all partisan, lol.
Seriously, I expected better out of you Aaron.

I agree 100% Brenda. People need to think outside the VP box and realize this woman could be the President of the United States. McCain is old, has had several bouts of cancer and may not live out his first term. Things can change rapidly when you are in your 70's. Illnesses can take hold and kill fast, dementia can become more and more prevalent. The thought of this woman, who has been a governor for a whopping 20 months, becoming President of the most powerful country in the WORLD, is horrifying. Whoever advised McCain on this one, should be FIRED. I have been a lifelong Republican, but cannot in good conscience vote for this ticket. I will write in my vote, therefore, I have the right to complain about the winner. If I didn't vote at all, then I really would have no right to gripe!
Secret Asian Man Sep 5th 2008 1:13AM
I still don't understand the logic behind picking her as VP.
Whatever. I'm an Obamabot, so I shouldn't care.
cc Sep 5th 2008 6:24AM
What a bunch of jealous people.....you go girl and show them all how...one tough cookie....that could kick a## and take numbers...
dj Sep 5th 2008 6:56AM
why would you think we are "jealous" just because we don't feel she is ready to be the President of the USA in the, very possible, event that McCain can't do the job? It has nothing to do with "jealousy", but logic

Palin is a breath of fresh air. .. not only is she quite capable as proven by her successes in Alaska over the past 5 years or more, she is thoughtful, mainstream, and unafraid to take on tough problems, tough people -- male or female .. . simply standing up for America, the ideals of the founding fathers alone will bring her face to face with the advesaries of America throughout the globe, whether it is Putin, terrorists, those withing our own country like William Ayers and anyone bent on hurting or weakening America. . . . I have traveled the world and see the contrast of many nations, its people, cultures and attitudes .. Palin will stand strong and firm in the face of any danger or threat to America. . because she does have that conviction that will put AMERICA first. I would bet my life on it that she has God on her side. I will look forward to seeing her in office for many years to come, especially should she become President, and can't wait to see her put Palosi in a time out!!! Further and most important, Palin alone is stronger than Biden and Obama combined, as is McCain...Biden has made no sound judgement for 30 years, so his credibility is shot. . and as for Obama---give me a break. . nice guy perhaps hardly as he is willing to let infants die, and shady, Obama has zero experience in any exectutive office, and would be bad for America. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxoiZdBSi-g PALIN and McCain a dynamic duo.
James Sep 5th 2008 9:29AM
Hey--don't fret. . . there is not one commi, one terrorist, or any world threat that she would not stand up firm to. I have no doubt that she is stronger than Obama, stronger than Biden in the face of foreign or domestic danger to America and its ideals. Putin would vote for Obama and Biden, as would the Communists leaders in China .. I have been to China and many countries in Europe and probably a majority of the Europeans raised in a socialist environment, and the Chinese in a govenement controlled media communist environment would want to see an Obama/Biden ticket succeed . "Why" you should ask yourself .. . it is because they wish for America to fail on the world stage, to be weakened, bow and bend inside the United Nations .. . Anyway, if you have been republican for years, and you consider the alternative---McCain and Palin would be Ronald Regans choice. Good Luck James

She may be a political breath of fresh air, but she is way out of her league. Obama is also a political breath of fresh air, as well as extremely intelligent and educated, and has the good judgement to surround himself with the best and the brightest people who will enable the United States to stand tall on the world stage again. Palin just got her first passport last year, which shows us that she could care less about the rest of the world. By choosing her, I suppose that the Republicans could care less about our economy, global strength, and the fact that we live in a global village. She has a BS in Journalism from The University of Idaho. Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review.
Palin, the unknown entity, did not mention the economy, health care, alternative energy, or education once in her speech. She spoke of being a "hockey mom", and the usual American apple pie, patriotic stuff. No substance to her in my opinion. She preaches abstinence instead of birth control for women - that worked really well for her family, now didn't it? She has never managed a budget crisis because she is governor of a state where it's citizens have been getting rebates for years (not because of her accomplishments but because of it's oil economy), yet she will inherit from Bush, the largest deficit in our nation's history.

You Lib's are so funny. You call Obama a black man and he is 6% black, 44% Arab and 50% white. 6% does not let you qualify as being Native American. So why does he claim to be black? Why doesn't he claim his Arab ancestry?

He's a mulatto

How would you know if Wasilla's residents exchange pies with each other? Did you visit their residentral districts? You are a joke and know NOTHING about Wasilla. And by the way, you don't even pronounce the word correctly!
Ramblin' with Roger Sep 10th 2008 3:48PM
So how DO you pronounce Wasilla?
PJC Sep 5th 2008 9:09PM
Alex,
You can go get your nails done now. Talk about condescension. You are simply a liberal wuss somehow
caught in a state that represents what the once-proud America used to be. Sarah's upbringing here is the perfect experience needed to lend some common sense and forthrightness to the PC pack of lawyers that rule us from DC. The Bloods (Dems) and the Crips (Republicrats) desperately need the wake-up call.
SARAH ROCKS!

Sarah Palin is a horrible choice! I am embarrassed as a woman that such an inexperienced woman would be put in such a position of power. McCain is an old man, and it is frightening that a woman who hasn't even been out of the US until last year could suddenly become president!
Palin is a right wing nut job with a degree in Journalism from the University of Idaho. Her choice, when there are so many more qualified women is an embarrassment to women. She preaches abstinence instead of birth control? We all know that worked out really well in her family! She is more of the same (Bush), another politician in bed with the oil companies.
Barack Obama is far brighter, educated at Columbia University, law degree from Harvard, also on the Harvard Law Review. He has sound judgement and will surround himself with the best and brightest. Palin can't touch Biden's accomplishments and experience.
I don't think she's tough enough either. Washington DC will eat her alive!
