I have 3 friends using them right now... they're all crossing the US via motorcycle, alone. One is a 18y/o kid, another is 22 and the last is in his 70's. All have families that are concerned for their well being (since they are all traveling alone, through remote sections of the US). It has it's purpose. Backcountry hikers, skiiers, solo river rafters, climbers, etc... (all activities done by folks I know who own them) there are TONS of "getting out there, living life" activities where it comes in handy. I hope to borrow one for a 2 week motorcycle trip I have planned for late August.
There are even some google-map hacks where you can have your OK's plotted on a map so people can follow you (not paying for their more advanced service). I know of at least 1 motorcyclist who had emergency services sent her direction when she stopped moving and didn't answer her cell phone. She's alive today because of it (and the people watching her progress.... another solo cross-country rider).
