Reward for missing dog at Washington Dulles
If you happen to be riding around in one of the Moon Rovers at Washington Dulles in the next couple days, keep your eyes peeled for any four legged creatures running around the tarmac.John and Ronia Weisner, two owners of a dog that was traveling with John, an active member of the armed forces, en route to Saudi Arabia, were horrified to find that their pet was lost at
The culprit, they suggest, is the substandard cage that the FAA required them to use -- apparently the new kennel that they purchased had to have screws in it but was still not structurally sound enough to handle the baggage system.
But how did the dog escape? Once the dog and cage went down into the luggage system, it appears that something struck its side and the dog broke free. As to whether the dog could have broken itself free, the Weisner's state:
"There's no way, no something hit it, bended it inward."
Now, in an effort to find the missing animal and restore peace to John and Ronia, the two have offered a $2500 reward, while United has put up another matching $2500. The pair have been scouring the tarmac with escorts looking for the dog and apparently have still yet to find the animal.

We, too, were military and flew all over the world taking our beloved pets with s. I found the best airline for transporting pets is Lufthansa. They actually CARE about animals.

What a sad situation. I have 2 dogs that I love dearly and couldn't stand it if they were lost. One of them got out one day and by the time I got outside, I couldn't find him. I'm handicapped and it is difficult for me to walk. I immediately called our animal shelter and gave them a full description of him. Within an hour, they brought my dog home to me. Thank goodness. Since then, I ensure that he is properly controlled. I read somewhere that you should never allow the dog to go out the front door ahead of you until you're sure that the dog is properly controlled. My dogs are all I have and I love them. I hope this family gets their precious animal back.

Surprise, surprise....it's UNITED AIRLINES once again showing its inability to run its business. The stockholders should DEMAND the resignation of United's self-righteous CEO Glenn Tilton and his team of fat-cat cronies who are screwing every consumer stupid enough to fork over money to them (and laughing all the way to their banks where they keep their personal funds). Tragic. I feel for the employees who work for this terrible terrible company.

Another "black eye" for United Airlines?? I'm shocked!! NOT!!!! United is undoubtedly one of the worst airlines still flying.....they could screw up a "one can milk route". I feel terrible for these folks because if they went to all the effort to take their dog with them on a military PCS (Permanent Change of Station) move then it is obviously part of the family. I feel even worse for the dog having to run around the airport scared of all the noise and probably being harassed by TSA for not having his boarding pass and a metal tag on his collar. My guess is that some United employee intentionally opened the cage door and let the poor dog out when the dog refused to pay an extra $25.00 fee for his bag of doggie bones.

Being a retired United Rampserviceman I want to tell all of you that kennels are not put on baggage conveyer systems. The only exception is the belt loader planeside.
The Sky Kennels are only as good as the person tightening the screws when assembling the kennel. Usually it is the passenger. I am sorry that the dog got loose and I hope that it is recovered.

Sadly, the dog is either already dead or hopelessly lost.
What a mess.
I feel awful for the dog and the family.
Stupid airlines.

SHAME ON UNITED!
sylell Jul 16th 2008 5:28PM
This is inexcuseable - this is a family member - if it was their human child more effort wold be put forth. No amount of money will make it right - the XCEO of United needs to get his butt out there and look until the dog is found.

WHY would they be transporting an animal in such a way that other luggage could "SLAM" into it's kennel? If something hit that kennel hard enough to break it, the animal could've easily died from having it's head SLAMMED against the interior of the kennel. Maybe the animal didn't escape. Maybe the animal died, and the airlines doesn't want to take responsiblity for it. SUE, SUE, SUE!

Lose all the animals in this country. Under God (or beneath Him), we rule the world, and animals are beneath us. Try relating to people, not animals.

I understand the frustration and sympathize and agree with most of the comments above- people need to vent and some very good points were made; but I believe that in addition to posting on the internet, more effective would be to write to the airlines about their substandard practices and inefficiencies. Be pro-active and SHOUT to those at fault about thier inadequecies, especially when a story like this one is brought to the attention of the world. Writing one letter may seem like a drop in the bucket, but if enough people expressed their opinions & concerns to the culprits, it might just cause a ripple effect.

Poor people my heart goes out to them - unless you are a true dog lover you wouldn't understand how much they mean - they are like children I would never let mine go anywhere with out me - of course I undertsamd why they had to. God bless them and I truly hope they find their little buddy.

The folks who work at United Airlines couldn't find their butt with BOTH hands and "help". What morons! Some Chinese family is having a feast out of the dog.

i hate airports, they can never get anything right now a-days and if anything does go wrong, its never their fault. I mean a member of the military was traveling not for fun but for a tour of duty. And his family was coming with which for most people includes their pets. Thats just another reason why i will never fly again, or at least put everything into a carry-on. Besides that i also believe that United should put up more then $2500 dollar reward i mean its their fault, they lost the dog...oh my bad...the "equipment" that the airport provided wasn't good, sure its not, im not trying to sound sarcastic, but i mean the family goes out and buys a portable cage for their dog and they cant use it. I would sue the airport if i were them.

It will be a great day for the United states and the rest of the world when United and American Airlines finally go out of business for good.
amy Jul 16th 2008 5:55PM
I cannot come close to imagining the sorry this family feels for losing their pet... I would be unglued. I will pray for their pet's safe return to family.
