Fun in Fairfax: 17 exotic snakes found in hotel room
I hesitate to make snakes on a plane jokes because they're bad and overused, but in this case I'm going to have to do it once again. What just might be worse than snakes on a plane? Snakes in your hotel room. Fairfax City police said that they found a total of 17 exotic snakes in the room of the Hy-Way Motel last night near Fairfax Circle, VA. 12 of those snakes happened to be poisonous. The hotel management was alerted to the snake issue because of the report of a foul odor coming from said room; two of the snakes had died which led to the smell. The snakes are believed to belong to an Arlington County man who kept as many as 100 exotic snakes in his home until recently. I think the important question here is: why did the snakes need a getaway at a cheap roadside hotel?
This gives us just another reason as to why it's important to fully investigate your hotel room (which can harbor some nasty things) before committing to stay in it for the night.
Think that's weird? What strange things have been found on planes?

Oh, how the media loves snake stories. It is so easy to make snide comments about people who care about the freaky beasts. Further untruths without fact checking. Fact- a minority of snakes have the ability to inject venom into their prey(food). No snake is poisonous. Licking a Puff Adder with NOT transfer poison in anyway, nor will biting a Rattlesnake in the butt. If a hotel room was found full of exotic Serval kittens they would be on every morning show, to show the effects of animal cruelity. Brutalized snakes and dead snakes-Who cares? Ship them out ASAP.

As a resident of Fairfax and someone that has definitely partied at the craptacular Hy-Way motel before this does not surprise me. Well maybe a little. Good thing no one checked into that room. I wonder how long those snakes had been dead for? and Why on earth did that guy need to be carting them around with him?

what an iddiott of course snakes are poisonous if they bite you..and yes you could die within seconds...and sorry but what moron would have such things in some hotel room..and lets get real..two were dead so how long did this asshole leave them there...noone knows the facts except the person who did it..but I surley dont want to be anywhere near snakes..and they definetly dont belong in a hotel..
blue Jul 14th 2008 4:04PM
Actually, Eric, snakes are NOT poisonous. They are venomous. Venom is injected (ie through a snake bite) while poison is ingested (ie eaten/drank). And there are tons of snakes that aren't venomous, so just because you get bit by a snake doesn't mean your going to die. It may bleed for awhile but if it's not a venomous snake then that's likely the most damage it will do. And contrary to popular belief, snakes are more scared of you than you are of them. Of course if you go after one it will try to defend itself, but most snakes will want to get away from you before you hurt it.
This guy was a nut - why would anyone treat an animal in such a terrible way? As another commenter said, if this was a case with puppies or kittens it would receive much more attention. Snakes are very neat creatures and should be treated with the respect they deserve.

the hotel has some questions to answer.i would fine them or the owner of the snakes .lastly house keeping hello. some one has to know a reason
Carla Jul 14th 2008 4:29PM
It's not that surprising except how could two snakes die in there and the housekeepers not notice it. You can find many things in hotel rooms.....what if the housekeepers only acted like they changed the sheets after every customer and Lord knows what you really are sleeping on...not to mention bed bugs, roaches, mice , spiders and are the showers or tubs really clean . People take short cuts in thier Jobs all the time what if the hotel owners and staff done the same thing......so you just never know whats really in a hotel/motel room even in the most posh~

How in the heck did the snakes get in the room? Did someone open the door and let them in? Hello!
Doris Bryant Jul 14th 2008 5:06PM

Eric K Jul 14th 2008 5:02PM
Uhh, the snakes were in boxes, and the room was rented to store them while he found a new home for them. Does anyone read anything these days?

First of all, it would be much easier to read your post if you tried using correct English punctuation and grammar. I have no idea what most of your post said because the entire thing was one run-on sentence that didn't seem to make much sense at all.
Second, there's nothing wrong with keeping a snake as a pet if you take care of it. Sure, there are some people who get snakes as pets and do stupid things like let them loose, but I can guarantee that the majority of snake owners are responsible and take care of them. Just like some people are cat people and some people are dog people, some people (myself included) do like snakes and other reptiles and amphibians. An animal doesn't have to roll over or play fetch in order to be a good pet to some.

God so hard to make sense out of some of these posts. Caps and all the words stuck together whatever happened to punctuation?
Snakes like dark spaces and they probably took refuge behind dressers. Sounds like the poor things starved to death. I am not a snake fan but no animal deserves to be just dropped off somewhere and left to die.
