I learn my way around by finding / trying to find a landmark or something memorable in each of the four (n-e-s-w) directions.

My normal way to figure out my way around a new city is by accessing the internet and getting maps to what I am interested in. I did get to drive a car with a GPS device in it once and that was so much easier. I would love to win one and make that my favorite way to get to know a new city.

I talk with the locals to identify landmarks and must-knows. I find out where the local police, fire and hospitals are. I also make note of my frequently visited shops (i.e., Walmart, Target). I use all of this to make a mental map of the city. This way I can explore and if I get lost, I can reference one of these places.

In a new city, I typically ask hotel staff, taxi drivers, and/or guides how to navigate to places of interest. If a map is available, I mark the locations so that, if there is a language barrier, I can simply show it to anyone for directions.
