I do research online and print out any directions I might need before I go on a trip.

I find my way around new cities by walking around a lot and getting lost. It is time consuming and frustrating sometimes , but I remember the city better later. I also use simpler tourist maps with landmarks, as those work the best for orienting myself.

Either mapquest, or just get lost and get lucky.

I usually consult Google maps or the front desk at the hotel (unless I know some locals, then I let them show me around).

Study the maps and get an image in my mind about what is N, S, and then just go with it! Always know the general direction of the hotel or "home base". Never hesitate to ask store clerks for recommendations for restaurants or directions. Take a pad and pen to jot notes...
Those are a few of my favorite!

I typically look at a map before I leave to get my bearings. Sometimes I will buy a guidebook, but generally I look at Google Maps to help me out.

before i even leave for a place i usually google information about it and sometimes print out maps. or i find a major landmark of that city or town and then i just look for stuff off of that and drive around and get lost and such!

I rely on a combination of directions retrieved off of my computer and by getting lost and having to ask a stranger.

I get lost so easily, so I try to google the directions, but it would be so much easier with a gps. Its hard to read and drive at the same time. Thank you so much.

When myself and my husband travel I am the navigator, I use maps but somehow we always end up in the worst neighborhood. I guess I'm not the greatest navigator but I always get us back on track and we see alot of places we did not intended on seeing...

Haven' travelled for ages, but I used to write the chambers of commerce of cities I planned to visit and they ususally sent me a city map!

i find my way around a city by asking people..Most of the times i am lost and only after spending some hours i can find my way

I ususally travel with google maps and of course the laptop, so the info is at the ready...a GPS would be ideal though.

I have a lot of trouble finding my way around. I have been known to get lost literally driving around the block! My biggest trouble is knowing which way to turn. My husband gives me directions three ways - verbally (turn by turn), writing the turns down, and a map - and even then I sometimes get lost.
Street maps absolutely baffle me. If I had a GPS system like the Tom Tom, I would probably get to where I want to go with less wrong turns.

I use a road map and do pretty well with that. If I know someone in the area, I will get directions and landmarks from him or her. Hotel staff definitely are most helpful when it comes to directions. Not long ago I had difficulty finding a certain street, and I pulled into a hotel to ask for directions. The front desk clerk gave me a map and highlighted the directions for me with a highlighter. Police officers are also an excellent source of information. When I've been detoured and wasn't sure of the best way around, I have asked the officer directing traffic for directions, and they have been quite helpful. This happened just a week ago, and the officer was quite friendly. Mapquest is sometimes helpful, but it has been hit or miss. I prefer to get directions from people who know the area. Road maps seem to be better at giving the "big picture" as to where things are located.
Prior to a long road trip through unfamiliar territory, I stop by the AAA Travel office to get road maps and information about the area I am about to visit. AAA Trip-Tiks are most helpful. I have found road maps to be more useful than Mapquest.
I would love to win the Tom Tom so that I can find my way around in unfamiliar places, and keep my head up while driving instead of trying to refer to a road map. Certainly is safer--plan ahead with the road maps and use the GPS to go from there! Sounds like a winner to me!!

Oh, I find my way around. That's exactly how I do it- I drive around, and around and around. Eventually, after I've landed in 10 dark dead-end alleys and asked 27 clueless and English language challanged convenience store clerks I eventually may actually find where I'm going.

i use my tom tom
Victoria Winson Jul 8th 2008 4:51PM
I usually print out Google maps for the area and surrounding areas. I ask locals if I get lost and my map doesn't show exactly where I need to be.

I learn by trial and error.

I always get lost!
