I've been up Mt Semeru. The top is quite high for a volcano and there's the lake near the top, secluded spot to chill out. Every morning at nine it erupts toxic gas near the top - quite a view from afar. No need to bring climbing gear, only camp gear will do. The path is very well defined. Hire a guide from the ranger office.
The most dangerous part of it all is the jeep ride to the foot of the mountain.
