Look out! The terrorists have curry!
Something didn't smell right. British Airways passengers started to panic when a foul smell started coming from their aircraft on a flight between Belgrade and London. Fearing a terrorist attack, the captain turned around the aircraft and put it back down in the Serbian capital, where the aircraft was evacuated and contained separately on the runway.Passengers screamed in horror fleeing from the aircraft as they were helped by workers in hazmat suits.
Investigators first feared that a a container with acidic chemicals had burst in the hold and was causing havoc among the cargo. But upon further investigation, they narrowed the source down to a package of curry.
This follows on the heels of an emergency landing earlier this year of an Alitalia flight because of similar fears --- the source of which was revealed to be minced onions.

This is too funny. Has anyone submitted a video to YouTube yet. A plane full of people screaming in terror because of some curry. Although I have to say I have screamed in pain because of to much curry. :)

This is an issue that has no simple answers. Common sense and courtesy should dictate that a food item that is pungent will offend a large number of people and should not be brought aboard an aircraft. However, many cultures subsist on diets that are exactly that: pungent. These cultures cannot stand the blandness of the western food that will offend less than 0.01% of the world's population.
Too bad for those cultures. The so-called bland food that we westerners consume will not kill you or scald you to death and can be eaten by nearly everyone on the planet. Pungent food has no place in a trapped environment like an airplane or bus.
Grab a fresh hot pizza from the terminal and we can all enjoy the aroma.

Common Sense, it is so simple yet rarely used...
Worst flight I ever worked, The family using "Common Sense" brought her family food, I was so happy...... Common Sense didn't work when she packed the entire family TUNA FISH!
OMG... The stinch..... You can't make this stuff up!

I have the sweetest neighbors in the entire world but they use curry to cook every single meal. I swear to god...I think they even put that stuff on ice cream....
Since we live in a duplex/condo, the smell comes through our walls at least three times a day and will (quite literally) make your stomach turn over about fifty thousand times. I can't even imagine why some idiot would have brough it on a plane.

PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO BRING FOOD OF ANY KIND ON AIRPLANES!

Um, this post is about British Airways, so for those of you screamin' and hollerin' about immigrant this and that, particularly #'s 4 and 10, curry is absolutely not foreign to the Brits. All Brits, white, brown, black ,and purple alike. It is practically their national food, they love it so much. The person probably just thought "Hmm. I am probably not going to be able to get any good curry in Serbia, perhaps I'll take along my own."
I actually think that it would have been better in his carry on versus the cargo, because at least that part of the plane is ventilated.

Wouldn't have bothered me....I love the taste AND smell of curry. And I'm not Indian or SouthEast Asian either- I'm White, from Ireland. I hate bland food like potatoes and the likes. I prefer to eat Spanish, Arabic, Indian, etc types of food. Just depends on the persons preference and taste, not their culture or color of their skin. Remember, Ignorance go hand in hand with stupidity!

Good on ya Jae. you mentioned SE Asia, have you tried beef rendang? http://www.marcusleadley.com/recipes/beef-rendang.html
you deserved it.
Jae Jul 4th 2008 1:01PM
Mmm sounds tasty. I'm not a big beef eater though, I prefer mainly chicken and fish with rice and spicy sauces/seasoning and lots of veggies. Yummmm. :-p

If it smelled that bad, it no doubt had gone bad.
Usually curry smells good.
Cecile Jul 4th 2008 11:31AM
Good point. I'm also of Irish heritage and love the Indian cuisine.

It's racist comments like yours that set this country back 100 years. How ignorant!

Curry does smell and taste pretty good, but it can be overwhelming. This reminds me of the guy who sat NEXT to me on a non-stop flight from Hawaii to NY. He ATE the stinky stuff. Then, it came out of his pores for the next 9 hours. I, too, wanted to scream.
TK Jul 4th 2008 11:47AM
Oh, and tuna isn't offensive - get used to other people's food choices, this is not Nazi Germany.
Diana Jul 4th 2008 12:22PM
Yummy! Kimchee. (I'm an old, white American broad, too)!
