This is a fun and well written article. The multicolored buldings also made me think of the Italian island of Burano near Venice, where the also paint the houses many bright colors. It looked pretty but I think the reason given was so that the fishermen could see their homes as they sailed back in at the end of the day, and know if their wives were waiting for them.
