Jinx! I just blogged about this today, too: http://windowseat.travelocity.com/2008/06/virgin_america_does_it_different.html . I totally agree with you--the extra fees can add up, but there still is a ton you can get for free in comparison with other airlines.
Also, just want to point out that Virgin America actually does not have any kind of business relationship with Virgin Atlantic, which is probably why the set-up is different.
