Forbes magazine rates Europe’s 20 most congested cities

It probably won’t shock you that Forbes magazine ranks London as Europe’s most congested city in its 2008 survey.

Londoners drive an average speed that is a hair under 12 mph. I’ve been in such traffic in London that I would have loved to get going even that fast.

Researchers came up with their list of the 20 most congested European cities by clocking the average speed of cars in a 16-square-mile section in the center of 30 major cities.

I was surprised about how many other UK cities turn up in the magazine’s list. Nearly half are in either England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, which, it seems to me, makes Great Britain the worst European country to drive in. Anyone else out there agree?

Of course, I shouldn’t gloat. I live in the city that ranked second on the list: Berlin.

The 20 most congested cites in Europe, according to Forbes, are:

  1. London
  2. Berlin
  3. Warsaw
  4. Manchester
  5. Edinburgh
  6. Rome
  7. Glasgow
  8. Bristol
  9. Paris
  10. Belfast
  11. Munich
  12. Amsterdam
  13. Dublin
  14. Birmingham
  15. Barcelona
  16. Prague
  17. Leeds
  18. Cardiff
  19. Newcastle
  20. Vienna
