Now, if you're looking for international award travel, I would suggest topping off those miles if it makes senses financially and schedule-wise.
Recent example, I was able to score an award roundtrip ticket to Stockholm on short notice by topping off my account with 3,000 miles which cost about $130.
In the end, I paid only $130 + the $75 award fee = a little over $200 for a summer round-trip fee to Europe.
Full fare tickets to Stockholm were running $1,250 at that time.
