Hi Chris,
We are re-designing exhibits for a museum in Calgary. The job sort of just worked out in such a way that we were able to design while in Mexico. Basically we provide designs and mechanical drawings for this particular upgrade among other things. It is pretty awesome to be able to work and earn the Canadian dollar while we are living somewhere else.
I think that web design/programming work would definitely be jobs that would allow you to work for a North American company while you are away but I am sure if you are creative you can sort out something else. The internet has made working away from home pretty easy.
But I think your hostel idea is a great one! We have talked about that before as well and it is still floating around as an idea...
Let me know how it goes for you...
Good Luck and thanks for reading!
