U.S. Airways: Goodbye to those salty peanuts
Those following the cash-strapped airline industry had to know this day was coming. In the latest cost-cutting move by a major U.S. carrier, U.S. Airways is eliminating free snacks from its flights starting June 1.
Those snacks cost $.03 per passenger, as posted by the Consumerist.
The airline is already charging fees for a second checked bag and preferred seating -- window or aisle seats -- on all of its flights.
Of course, this begs the question whether anyone will care. I mean, how good were these roasted peanuts and small Rold Gold pretzel packages anyway?
I'm looking forward, though, to the airline's report about how much this move will save them.
What strange things have been found on planes?

no-no -no mr drill here. we need to use their oil and save ours so that when things tough (oil is a finite resource), we'll have it and the others won't.
we also need to use more renewable energy sources for things like heating and electricity so we will have more oil for transportation.

Say how about a smile once in awhile and some friendly service with showing some interest in the passengers (customers). As for the peanuts or snacks, if that is going to save them in cost of operating a flight, if they can show that they appreciate the customer, I might want to travel again with the airline that shows a real interest in me.

If CEO's and upper management would take a fair cut there wouldn't be such a pinch. I would rather drive than fly anymore as they treat fliers worse everytime I flew. Drilling in Anwar can be done. Just have to make oil companies clean up their role. Trans alaskan pipeline proved that. If China can drill off Florida, why can't we???
If stores banded together & jacked prices up like the oil companies have done, the feds would put a stop to it, but our government biggies are on the dole from big oil. It is a crime what they are doing top the American public.

Thank you Mr. Thornton! CEOs and upper management are greedy! After cutting my pay 28%, US Airways mgmt. voted themselves a 4% pay RAISE, then "voluntarily" took a 5% cut. How gallant! And did I mention I'm a single mother?

Well it would not amaze me at this paticular point in time, It cost's .03 a bag but will probably start charging $3.00 a bag for stale peaunuts. Pretty soon they probably start charging usage of air or the toilet's even. But i better stop or i'll give these so called executive's a new idea or, What i say of their idea's a brain fart

Fight back, keep asking them for bottles of water, they have to give it you. Make them pay for stopping the snacks.

its only 3 cents!!! the least you can do when your payin $400. US airways was already at the bottom of my list for airlines and now it has sunk to a new low

I'm not sure this cost-cutting measure is all it's cracked up to be. I think anyone who shops at Costco can figure out that pretzel-cutting can't cancel out jet fuel price increases. Perhaps this is meant to draw attention to the "legacy" airlines' financial woes.

I don't mind that they're not giving free snacks anymore. They're never healthy so I usually bring my own anyway. I always bring my own water, because bringing a bottle I can put the cap on and keep it in my seat back pocket...in the cup they give you, you either have to chug it or keep your tray table down until you finish it.
I also think Americans overall eat and snack too much so it is probably not a bad thing to go without a fatty snack for a few hours. When you have to pay for it, maybe you think twice about what's going in your mouth. Eat a meal before you get on the flight, and unless your flight is 5 hours, you do not NEED food during the flight.
You can all say I'm being a jerk but seriously, stop complaining. Fares haven't gone up nearly as much as they should with rising fuel costs. The airlines are trying to cut corners without slapping us with crazy high fares. They're TRYING!! If it's only 3 cents you shouldn't care. It's not like you're losing a $100 value. I'll give you 3 cents myself and you can bring 5 pretzels from home, and then look, nothing has changed...
