Traveling in Rome, American tourist is drugged, robbed, then killed by train

Frank Phel, 74, of California, was struck and killed by a subway train May 23 after being drugged and robbed in Rome, the Associated Press is reporting.

Italian police on Saturday arrested a 54-year-old Italian man who, they say, talked up Phel and his wife at a nearby cafe before fetching them cappuccinos that he'd spiked with a combination of drugs, including sleeping pills. The AP reports that he then robbed them and left them stumbling around the neighborhood in a drugged state. At the station, Phel accidentally walked onto the tracks.

Phel's wife was hospitalized and then released.

The couple had just completed a Mediterranean cruise, the AP says.

Investigators are now going over footage from the cafe, which apparently captures the couple's encounter with the robber.
