3 men, 1 van and 48 states in less than 120 hours
This morning, when there was one woman (me) in one car (a Toyota Corolla) going along 3 streets in 5 minutes on my way to teach a class, I heard about these 3 guys who are in a car traveling this week to all 48 states in the continental U.S. They're not traveling through each state, but are at least crossing borders to say they've been in each one.
One of the guys, Joshua Keeler, was being interviewed on the radio about the trip. Originally, years ago, this was going to be his father's trip. His dad, James, had mapped out the journey, but James' mother's death kept him from going. Joshua got hold of the maps and corralled his two friends Joey Stocking and Adam Gatherum to go along with him on this journey they are calling, "The Great American Road Trip." There is an attempt to break the Guinness record for a similar trip, although, Guinness no longer keeps such records for road safety sake.
This morning the trio was in South Dakota. They started in Vermont on Sunday, and tomorrow they will end their trip at Four Corners, the spot where Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico meet. You can see the path these three took and get more details about them at their Web site greatamericanroadtrip.us
Keeler said they are eating a lot of cold canned soup and snack packs. There really isn't any time to stop except for gas and to use the toilet. They've noticed a 50 cent fluctuation in gas prices and have found that their 2005 Toyota Scion is perfect for the journey.

Here's the route they're taking.

This is done every day, several times a day. The people that do it are called truckers. Coast to Coast in 2 days, then back again.

We want to congradulate you on your adventurous spirit! We are both retired and are full time RVer's. We left Portland Oregon 5/12/07 and have spent a year traveling around this great country see all sort of wonderful things. Sure the gas is expensive these days, but like they say: "You can't take it with you" when you die. We both feel that those of you that are critical to there men are just jealous that you aren't about to do it. Someday you wish you could have done at like 1/4 of what they've done. Keep going guys!

If they had made it to Hawaii and alaska, that would have been cool, otherwise, boring.

Sounds fun but it isn't unless you stop overnight somewhere at least after driving for more than 10 hours, which is what we did when we first started our trip from NH/Mass border to Key West Fl, took us 4 days. On the way back from the Keys, we stopped overnight in Titusville Fl to rest. Next morning we started at 8 am Wednesday and got home by 6 am Thursday. We drove Rt 95 all the way going 10 miles over the speed limit when we could, stopping only for gas, toilet and a stretch every couple hundred miles. By the last 2 hours, I had a hard time staying awake and was seeing double as if I had been drinking all night. I needed to keep moving in my seat to stay awake so I could make sure the driver was not nodding off. Driving all that way was not pleasant at all.

if they had made it to Hawaii and alaska, that would have been a real accomplishment, otherwise, boring. Good for the gas companies. Get a job guys.

I've gone through 10 different states without stopping. Its actually really fun. You DO go through big cities, and past historical sites, and I have over 800 pictures of it. Its something unique, and you'll remember it for the rest of your life.

Geez, what a bunch of old whiny people! If you can't see the adventure in this, it's time to get new glasses. First off, there's the scenery, each state has it's own unique landscape, then other little fun things (like how a menu in VT is different from one in TX) and lastly, if you might have noticed from the map, they didn't end up in the same place they started, and they never said they wouldn't take their time going home again.
Fred May 9th 2008 11:12AM
I think its great. How many people can say, they have been to all 50 states.
Fred May 9th 2008 11:13AM
Excuse me 48states
