3 men, 1 van and 48 states in less than 120 hours
This morning, when there was one woman (me) in one car (a Toyota Corolla) going along 3 streets in 5 minutes on my way to teach a class, I heard about these 3 guys who are in a car traveling this week to all 48 states in the continental U.S. They're not traveling through each state, but are at least crossing borders to say they've been in each one.
One of the guys, Joshua Keeler, was being interviewed on the radio about the trip. Originally, years ago, this was going to be his father's trip. His dad, James, had mapped out the journey, but James' mother's death kept him from going. Joshua got hold of the maps and corralled his two friends Joey Stocking and Adam Gatherum to go along with him on this journey they are calling, "The Great American Road Trip." There is an attempt to break the Guinness record for a similar trip, although, Guinness no longer keeps such records for road safety sake.
This morning the trio was in South Dakota. They started in Vermont on Sunday, and tomorrow they will end their trip at Four Corners, the spot where Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico meet. You can see the path these three took and get more details about them at their Web site greatamericanroadtrip.us
Keeler said they are eating a lot of cold canned soup and snack packs. There really isn't any time to stop except for gas and to use the toilet. They've noticed a 50 cent fluctuation in gas prices and have found that their 2005 Toyota Scion is perfect for the journey.

Here's the route they're taking.

Why not just go to one state and actually enjoy it.

That is called staying home.

I think it's awesome they were adventurous. People in the US don't like to leave their comfort zone.

Awesome, I would love to do something like this. I would have to fit a shower in there somewhere though!

Where is your sense of adventure! At least these people are getting out and DOING SOMETHING. And, doing something not everyone else can claim... Sounds like a fun trip to me.

Whoopdie-doo. An "adventure" like that won't even get a rise out of their grandchildren.
mska May 9th 2008 10:41AM
It might not get a rise out of your grandchildren, but I think their grandchildren will more than likely be raised with the same adventurous spirit, and may choose to repeat the trip some day . . . perhaps on motorcycles? I'm actually jealous. Way to go guys!
Jim May 9th 2008 9:30AM
Sounds like he did it to honor his father, who wasn't able to do the trip. Not something I would consider worthy of ridicule.

I hear a lot of jealousy here! 3 friends on a road trip sounds like a great bonding experiance. And having a common goal to achieve makes it that much sweeter!

You go boys! I think that is really cool. I just want to know how much did it cost you to do it. You make a woman proud. Now you can drive me where I need to go.

whats the point of going to every state in the U.S. if you don't get out of your car in any state except to get gas? You might as well build a treadmill for your car...
monkrya755 May 9th 2008 10:22AM
Why do you have to be such a dick about it they had fun isnt that what itz about!!??

THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW IN EVERY STATE BY SPEEDING TO SET A RECORD (THAT NO ONE CARES ABOUT ANYWAY) THAT IS LIKE TAKING STEROIDS TO MAKE YOU PLAY BETTER
sarah May 9th 2008 11:22AM
Actually, they aren't really breaking the speed limits by very much if they do. I, and a friend from New Hampshire, just drove from school in Portales, New Mexico to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, hitting 9 states in 25 hours. When we stopped for gas, which was only $180 the whole way in an '08 Hyundai Elantra, we would switch drivers and sleep occassionally while the other drove. That way we were rested, wasted no time, and we had fun. And by no means were we the ones going the fastest; we were passed on the interstate all the time. I loved the drive and would do it again in a heartbeat!

Looks like, being guys, they failed to ask for directions and missed Florida. Sorry guys you only got 47 States, but good for you.
