A little more research on the subject, beyond the video and short blurb you linked to, shows that the ritual is practiced by both Muslims and Hindus in India. Also, it's clearly a cultural tradition and has nothing to do with either Islam or Hinduism.
I'm sure you don't mean to come off this way, but this post really smacks of religious and cultural bigotry - something I'm seeing more and more from a handful of Gadling's posters.
