As a gold member of American advantage club, I purchased miles that were good for upgrades when I purchase a ticket. However the last several times I have flown, I never can get an upgrade. American should let fliers use their purchased upgrades as regular frequent flier miles since with fewer flights and most already booked the money I spent on upgrades will never be used and I'm out the money.
