Polar bear Knut senselessly murders ten carp in front of zoo visitors
Knut, the once-cute celebrity polar bear turned vicious killer, is at the center of a controversy over his brutal slaughter of ten carp at the Berlin Zoo. The massive polar bear, who has lived at the zoo since birth, apparently fished the carp out of the moat surrounding him and ripped them to shreds in front of several disgusted zoo patrons.
One of Germany's top newspapers, Bild, ran the headline "Knut Embroiled in Carp Scandal," and featured an article which quoted animal rights groups who criticized zoo officials for placing live animals within Knut's reach.
It seems that Knut, the psychopathic killer that he is, eventually chowed down on the fish, but according to the BBC, "There is speculation that hand-reared Knut killed the carp just for fun." One German newspaper reported that Knut "senselessly murdered the carp" before leaving their remains.
I think Tyler Cowen says it best: "Umm... HE'S A POLAR BEAR!"

He's a polar bear! He's doing what polar bears do naturally. He doesn't stop to pose for pics for the camera...or hide behind a screen to go to the bathroom. HE'S A POLAR BEAR anything else is in the minds eye of the beholder.

What is wrong with these people? He's a Polar Bear!!!! That is what Polar Bears do in the wild. The stupid Carp that your so conserned about is just part of the food chain. If you don't like what you see at the Zoo. Then maybe you should keep your liberal asses home and live in your fairy tale land. I swear people are getting more and more stupid.

I think Kunt should be put to death, but in a humane way.
Garjaya Apr 13th 2008 8:40AM
Bears Eat fish,it's nature, did these morons think Knut would stay cute all his bear life.Knut is doing what comes natural to him, that all.

Laura Apr 13th 2008 8:49AM
Stop the presses!!!!!! Holy Crap, he's a BEAR.
"Senselessly murders"? Murder?? Carp are FOOD, and wild bears KILL their food. I'm happy he knows HOW to kill after living in zoo all his life at least he retained some "natural" instincts.
If he "senselessly" murders a zoo keeper, THEN it's headlines.

And the carp were put in his enclosure for WHAT reason to start with..? Duh..! Maybe training him naturally to hunt, to show zoo goers what really happens in 'the wild'. Get a grip people..
Dee Apr 13th 2008 8:43AM
If we have animals in zoo's to observe, they are likely to exhibit some natural behavior. Maybe the zoo should post warning signs. lol :P

I think the story points out the small mindedness of some people. People who cannot understand the life style of the animal kingdom. Perhaps they never had the advantage to learn about this so hence the reason it seemed so disgusting when it happened. The reporter should have really interviewed the eye witnesses and learned why they felt the way they did. Then we would have had a true (maybe) sense of why they were so upset. Then the reporter could have directed them to places where they could learn about it.

I think we need clinton and obama to get involved with this, With the proper help I am sure they could convince him to eat only Mcfish sandwiches (Thier promising everthing else, why not ?)!
gary Apr 13th 2008 8:48AM
And people let the slaughter house do the killing for them. Is it really any different?
katie724 Apr 13th 2008 8:51AM
Has Knut been charged yet?
When is the trial?
Unbeliveable BS......
What next..

A bear killed fish and that's news? I think now that the media has turned against him he can go hang out with Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, etc.-now that WOULD be news.

I recall the story about the scorpion hitching a ride across a river on the back of another animal and stinging its host midstream. When asked why he did it that now they would both die, the scorpion answered, "It's just my nature." The reason people aren't allowed to pet bears and lions and such in a zoo is that they are WILD ANIMALS, however long they've been in the zoo. Wake up people, the bear ate the fish eventually. Kill it while it's handy, then eat it...it might not be there later.

Knut is a wild animal doing what wild animals do and for those horrified witnesses grown up and get a life. I imagine that soon PETA will get involved and demand that the Zoo send Knut to the Arctic and replace the five fish.
gina Apr 13th 2008 8:52AM
Come on.. That is why they are called wild animals.. We should leave them alone and keep them in the wild.
Grniis Apr 13th 2008 8:59AM
Give him life behind bars, OH YA they already did... poor thing
