Polar bear Knut senselessly murders ten carp in front of zoo visitors
Knut, the once-cute celebrity polar bear turned vicious killer, is at the center of a controversy over his brutal slaughter of ten carp at the Berlin Zoo. The massive polar bear, who has lived at the zoo since birth, apparently fished the carp out of the moat surrounding him and ripped them to shreds in front of several disgusted zoo patrons.
One of Germany's top newspapers, Bild, ran the headline "Knut Embroiled in Carp Scandal," and featured an article which quoted animal rights groups who criticized zoo officials for placing live animals within Knut's reach.
It seems that Knut, the psychopathic killer that he is, eventually chowed down on the fish, but according to the BBC, "There is speculation that hand-reared Knut killed the carp just for fun." One German newspaper reported that Knut "senselessly murdered the carp" before leaving their remains.
I think Tyler Cowen says it best: "Umm... HE'S A POLAR BEAR!"

Oh the horror! Imagine a bear eating fish, like he would in the WILD. I think perhaps more people should be horrified that animals are kept in zoos. Where's the brains people? Where's the brains?

C'mon people. It is obviously a joke. Look at the wording "murders", "brutal slaughter". On Fish!! Please. And this from a country who practiced Genocide on people 65 years ago, they do not care about the bloody fish, it's all tongue in cheek. Dimwits

Wayne White Apr 13th 2008 8:15AM
Before we label Knut a killer........... anyone visited a slaughter house and see what we do to cows..... don't throw stones.... besides you should see what a polar bear can do to a seal..... have some respect
Earwig Apr 13th 2008 8:18AM
A bear behaves like a bear. These people calling him a murderer of fish are complete imbiciles!
Six Apr 13th 2008 8:22AM
This is a crazy world. People get worked up over a polar bear killing and eating fish (which by the way is his natural instinct) and don't think a thing about aborting babies!
penneymay Apr 13th 2008 8:21AM
people people people..... Knut was not trying to horrify you, the little polarbear is doing what nature intended him to do....... eat fish. if you really don't know the nature of a polarbear don't go see one.
margo Apr 13th 2008 8:22AM
Perhaps Knut should be taught to eat only veggies and not regular bear food and people should be taught to just eat veggies and leave the animals and fish alone...problem solved...all can then live peacefully forever and forever.
nova Apr 13th 2008 8:29AM
Are you f*(king kidding! They should stock the pond for this trapped bear so that he can do this ALL the time. This is part of the natural life of a bear!!!! What do we want from these trapped creatures that are there for OUR enjoyment. They pace back and forth with NOTHING to do but watch us! Get a grip! Its our responsibility to give them a life that is worth living. What a price to pay for us to LOOK AT THEM...AND BE AMUSED! TASTY TASTY MURDER!
wpennell Apr 13th 2008 8:25AM
This is why you don't sleep on a LIVE bear skin rug!
penneymay Apr 13th 2008 8:29AM
and to add to this comment i personally do NOT go to any zoo's..........a place to cage wild animals for humans to "visit"??? this is what is horrifying.
AmazinFan Apr 13th 2008 9:28AM
Perhaps Knut was simply expressing his frustration at being held captive while a different group on onlookers stare at him for endless hours. Why would zookeepers put live carp in the moat inside his enclosure and expect that a Polar Bear would not try to do what comes naturally and fish them out and eat them. Maybe if the zoo where Knut is being held captive can't handle the responsibility of caring for Knut they should send him to another zoo that can properly care for him or maybe they should have released him to the wilds of Antartica or Alaska where he would not be scrutinized for doing what he instictively would do if he were free.
Billie Apr 13th 2008 8:33AM
"Senselessly murdered th carp"?! Ummmm....he's a freaking polar bear. Just because he was raised by people does not mean he doesn't still have his animal instincts. Morons...
jack Apr 13th 2008 8:35AM
