Polar bear Knut senselessly murders ten carp in front of zoo visitors
Knut, the once-cute celebrity polar bear turned vicious killer, is at the center of a controversy over his brutal slaughter of ten carp at the Berlin Zoo. The massive polar bear, who has lived at the zoo since birth, apparently fished the carp out of the moat surrounding him and ripped them to shreds in front of several disgusted zoo patrons.
One of Germany's top newspapers, Bild, ran the headline "Knut Embroiled in Carp Scandal," and featured an article which quoted animal rights groups who criticized zoo officials for placing live animals within Knut's reach.
It seems that Knut, the psychopathic killer that he is, eventually chowed down on the fish, but according to the BBC, "There is speculation that hand-reared Knut killed the carp just for fun." One German newspaper reported that Knut "senselessly murdered the carp" before leaving their remains.
I think Tyler Cowen says it best: "Umm... HE'S A POLAR BEAR!"

Jack Rennscheidt Apr 13th 2008 6:47AM
Feed Knut reporters and animal (fish) rights activists...problem solved
old enough to remember Apr 13th 2008 1:09PM
Uh, weren't the animal rights people the ones complaining that Knut was being hand raised and wouldn't learn how to be a polar bear?
IRV Apr 13th 2008 6:49AM
Hey Aaron, you moron, bears kill fish and other things as part of their nature. How about not calling Knut a psychopathic killer for doing what comes naturally to him. God your an idiot. You shouldn't be allowed to publish anything in public. It's people like you that are ruining the gene pool in this country. Get over it people. This is a wild animal and that is how they are. It is no surprise except to someone trying to sensationalize things.
Anna Apr 14th 2008 1:05PM
Um, I'm pretty sure Aaron was being sarcastic.
Melz Apr 13th 2008 9:27AM
Umm, IRV, do you not recognize SARCASM when you see it? Also, maybe you should watch calling other people idiots when you don't know the difference between "Your" and "You're" . . . just a suggestion.

So, are we now going to get PETA to see about making it illegal for polar bears to eat fish?
Richard Apr 13th 2008 7:00AM
From the carp's point of view, this is a hate crime...can you say "Class Action Lawsuit"?
Rudy Apr 13th 2008 5:22PM
Was he suppose to go to the freezer get his fish put it over a fire and cook it. Come on he is still a wild animal born in zoo. Guess Zoo officials should just feed him at night when the public is not around, maybe he should have ordered takeout instead.
G.L. Apr 13th 2008 8:38PM
Maybe UNC basketball star Tyler Hansborough should adopt him and name him " Pyscho Knut."
james Apr 13th 2008 7:17AM
damm ihad fish for supper am i a murderer
margo Apr 13th 2008 8:00AM
only if you hand killed the fish yourself! Only an accomplice if you ate the evidence of the crime.
Linda Apr 13th 2008 7:21AM
This is the problem with the world, we try to make people and animlas do what that aren't born to do. Knut isn't a domestic animal, he needs to be in the wild..Maybe the zoo ought to feed him instead of critizize his instincts.
Yes he is cute but he is also a wild animmal, even domestic animals wil eat a bvird, rabit if caught..
It is the survival instinct.
Leave the bear alone and feed him.
The adults are the ones to blame, not the bear..as always !!
Robert Lewis Apr 13th 2008 7:20AM
I think we should notify the ACLU so they can boycott this travesty! Next, call the Animal Channel so they can swoop down to rescue the rest of those poor unsuspecting carp in the moat. Better slap a lock on the zoo gate, too, for fear of offending any more poor patrons!
This world is going to hell in a handbasket if this can make the news!
doggonemad77 Apr 13th 2008 7:20AM
I would like to read a headline, Humans viciously kill hotdogs, what the hell is wrong with people, bears eat fish. Guess what , you have to kill a fish before you eat it
Djock Apr 13th 2008 8:37AM
two polar bears come to the USA, the one says " now that were in the USA we should eat what the people here eat" and they stop at a hot dog stand. After taking off the wrapper, the other polar bear looks at his partner and says "What part did you get?"
Doug Apr 13th 2008 7:22AM
Get a freaking life! I don't care if the bear was raised in captivity. It is still a wild animal and was operating on instinct. Yes, he may have "enjoyed" the kill, but unlike humans, he at least ate it.
JOHN Apr 13th 2008 7:27AM
HE'S A BEAR ...............NORMAL,,,,,
Al Apr 13th 2008 4:03PM
Media people are so stupid! They called the bears action senseless murder or brutal slaughter...Just like what most of the comments here said..It's a freakin' bear and that's what bears do to eat!
Rick Wolf Apr 13th 2008 1:41PM
We need a heavy curtain and a switch at the people fence. When the bear eats or urinates or defictes, anyone can close the curtain so the tourists are not offended.
The cutain would also be sound proof in case of flatulence.
