In Soviet Russia, American Airlines ticket buys you!

Maybe it's all this talk of Olympic boycotts, or maybe Rocky IV was just on cable again. Whatever the reason, the folks over at American Airlines are in stuck in Cold War mode, as evidenced by their "Airport Lookup" menu. According to the Ph.D.'s in the Geography department at American, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is still kickin'-- and even better, you can fly there!
Yugoslavia also finds its way onto the list, but surprisingly Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire were left off.
The list of "countries" also features about a dozen places I've literally never heard of, like Guernsey, Jersey, Mayotte, and something called the Wallis and Futuna Islands. Apologies to all of our readers in those territories, but your existence is news to me.

Wallis and Futuna, officially the Territory of Wallis and Futuna Islands (French: Wallis-et-Futuna or Territoire des îles Wallis-et-Futuna, Fakauvea and Fakafutuna: Uvea mo Futuna), is a Polynesian French island territory (but not part of, or even contiguous with, French Polynesia) in the South Pacific between Fiji and Samoa. It is made up of three main volcanic tropical islands and a number of tiny islets.

Your Ottoman Empire crack made laugh.

Alofa, Hello,
Greetings from Wallis and Futuna islands. We're small but we do exist in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Wow... I was thinking at first that they must have never gotten around to changing their list (even though we're closing in on 20 years since the wall came down) and then realized... There were no websites in those days. The USSR would have been gone for years before American even built a site. Yikes.
Incidentally, Jersey and Guernsey are two of the "Channel Islands" off the southern coast of Britain. They're kind of part of Britain, and kind of not. Great place for offshore banking and, uh, not much else.

Where do you think the name "New Jersey" comes from? =)

I also notice that the Falkland Islands carries a dual notation of the Malvinas, although I would doubt any Argentinians are left on the islands after Lady Thatcher and the British Army and Royal Navy visited.

Aww poor tiny little island of Guernsey! Okay so the only reason I've heard of it is because a friend in Wales won a trip there... but apparently it's quite nice.
This was hilarious, thanks for sharing!
