Skybus goes bankrupt!
Skybus just announced that they're ceasing all operations and have declared bankruptcy. According to their website, they'll continue to close out flights today, but after that all bets are off. Being as it's 11:30 at the time of writing, I think that it's safe to say nobody else will be flying Skybus.According to the new modified website "Passengers holding reservations for Skybus flights scheduled to depart on or after Saturday, April 5, 2008 should contact their credit card companies to arrange to apply for a refund."
At the fall of ATA earlier this week I know that I was complaining about high oil prices and the competition that pushed the budget carrier of 35 years out of business. But I didn't expect the woes to be so widespread. I would now speculate about other carriers but don't want to jinx anyone.
We'll keep you updated on what happens on this surprising news.

Jet Blue is offering $50 standby tix for some affected Skybus passengers. Call them at 800-JETBLUE.
Jet Blue flies to Jacksonville and Ft Lauderdale.

We had to explain to our 9 and 13 year olds last night that we wouldn't be going to Disney today, because of Skybus. After the crying ended, I told myself and my family that we were blessed - we were not left stranded in an airport far from home.

Thanks gravy!
I did just that. Called Jet Blue and booked a standby for just $50. Hope it works out.

Well I just booked my buddies flight last Saturday to Greensboro from Chicago. He needs to take care of his father while his mother has knee surgery. Called my credit card company and they'll "send me the paperwork" . He needs a flight before the 17th. I checked US Air via Cheap Air $72 not bad, til they added the $75 taxes and surcharges and it becomes $i46. Boy this sucks.

In all honesty this is not truly "surprising" what with the cost of the go-juice and some of the actions surrounding the airline recently.
Good luck to everyone affected by the shutdown.

Looks like AirTran and USAir have matched JetBlue with $50 standby tix. 800-AIRTRAN and 800-428-4322.
Sucks to get stranded. I hope everyone gets home OK.

So much for going to florida this summer. I was just thinking the other day that it wouldn't be long till another budget airline goes out. Too bad for being convenient to go to an airport that had one airline.(Westover ARB)

You think it's all over? Aloha Airlines in Hawaii also went bankrupt, leaving tons of stranded passengers to and from Hawaii, With less then 24 hr. notice, and the upcoming worldwide hula competition.( Merrie Monarch). Luckily there is still the " ALOHA SPIRIT " here in Hawaii. Hawaiian Airlines & Mesa Airlines stepped forward to accommodate all the passengers to & from their destinations, Altho' a lot of baggage gone to the wrong places. Let's all hope our new "President of the United States" can turn the economy around!

Remember- the tickets you by on other airlines are stand by only. You pay $50.00 and if there is a seat open-you can take it. It isnt a confirmed seat. It is better then nothing but not much.Don't count on getting on if the flight is full or overbooked. Good Luck!

My husband and I were supposed to fly to Florida in a month on skybus. Now I have to frantically find another flight without spending an arm and a leg - we didn't budget in the extra flight money! Plus, I'm betting I never see the money again that I forked out for the flight through skybus.
They could've at least honored flights already booked! They only book 4 months in advance. Way to go skybus. Thanks for nothing!

HA! I flew in to Wilmington, DE on SkyBus on Friday night with two teenagers. My brother called the next morning with the news! We were supposed to fly back to Greensboro (and drive back to Roanoke, VA) on Sunday night. USAir couldn't/wouldn't help us. Seems we needed our SkyBus "ticket numbers." There are NO ticket numbers! SkyBus passengers print their Boarding Passes at home prior to the flight or at kiosks at the airport. The Passes have (had!) a 7-digit code and a bar code w/o numbers. Needless to say we had to rent a car and I (the only driver of the 3) made a ten hour drive to GSO + 2 more hours to Roanoke. At least we weren't stranded in L.A.! --Steve

I was one of the stranded passengers along with my mother, 2 sisters and sister-in-law. We were stranded in Myrtle Beach, SC. We found out 2 hours before the ceased all flights. GREAT :-(. Called anothter airline and got 5 tickets home and then when we got to the airport the flight was cancelled. Finally got home 2 days later. What a vacation !!!

Wow! Sure it sucks to get stranded - but they were good while it lasted. What about all of the people out of work? We should be more thankful - is it really that bad, does it really suck that bad in America? One would think so from the selfish points of view. Me I am thankful they were there to support getting my wife back and forth from Ohio to Chattanooga to care for her Mom stricken with a stroke even if it was only twice, thanks goodness I can still find another airline, or even if I have to drive thank God it is America and my gas is less than $4 a gallon. Yes I said thanks. And I have freeways to drive on, and restuarants to stop at, and rest areas, and scenic vistas, and for the most part friendly drivers and truck drivers, in a country where 94.5% of us have a job, 70% of us own a home, and we can vote and well - thanks America - thanks you Mr. President (whether you be a D or an R).

Well said. I too am one affected by having to make alternate arrangements for two future trips; however, I feel worse for the employees and their families who now find themselves out of a job with little or no income. They are the real victims in all of this.

My first time flying was on Skybus just a month ago from Columbus to Burbank. I had a great experience with the flight attendants. On our return flight we thought we were never going to get home with a 3 hour delay and then a stop for fuel which wasn't suppose to happen, but the flight crew was very friendly and upbeat considering they had been up since 6 in the morning or before and only get paid for the actual flight time a whopping $9 a hour!
