Your entry reminded me of my trip to Waiheke Island, New Zealand, in the harbor just outside of downtown Auckland. Waiheke reminded me of a cross between a Carolina barrier island (warm weather, palmetto trees, and sandy dirt) and a New England fishing village (slightly hilly with a quaint downtown). You can walk if you're ambitious (like me), or cars/mopeds are available to rent. There's a bus, too, if you have the patience to wait for a bus that comes every 30 minutes.
Anyway, it was a great break from the "bustle" of Auckland.
