When I traveled to Bali last summer I made it a goal to leave with a bag that weighed under 10 kilo, and I made it (6 week trip). I actually came in at 8.6 k. My rule is less is more. Buy it when you get there. It's not hard to find cheap t-shirts, short, sarongs, flip flops, etc. Everything is easy to come by. I carry one book, and when I've finished it I trade it for another. If I decide to buy souvenirs, I mail them back as I travel. That way I don't have to drag around extra weight, or buy another suitcase. I also have my laundry done every second or third day, which helps when you're traveling with a limited wardrobe.
