Woman crashes her car, saves her morning coffee
I just want to assure all of you that this is not a story about me. I am not saying "this would never, ever happen to me" but since I don't have a car here in the US, I don't have to make those hard choices: a latte or the front windshield? Hmm, tough.
A 22-year old woman from Oakland, California may have landed in the waters of the Oakland Estuary after losing control of her car on Thursday, but she never lost her grip on her morning coffee, APP writes. She was apparently reaching for her cell phone around 6 a.m. when the car sped out of control and became lodged under a home on stilts on the water.
She got out of the car uninjured and holding her coffee cup. This woman should be the next Bond girl!

She must be addicted to caffein.
She has lost her sense of priorities.
Poor kid need to go back to school

Let's see, 22 year old girl -- stop there. I'd say 80% of the accidents I read about in our local paper involve those 22 and under. Phones in cars should be outlawed, as should anything else that distracts someone's attention from the all important (and needless to say, potentially dangerous) job of DRIVING A VEHICLE.
JW Mar 31st 2008 3:49PM
Cell phones should not be outlawed in cars. People using them should learn to ignore them if they ring while they are driving. I always have my cell phone with me in case of an emergency. While you are in a vehicle that is the only reason it should be used.

I agree ... the only thing going on in a car should be driving it! No Phones, no smoking, properly contained pets, and no eating/drinking while driving. I know most will think I am acting like a communist but it really only takes a fraction of a second for an accident to arise from a silly error in driving. I guess that is difficult for those to imagine until it happens to you. The time involved is simply not enough to avoid the inevitable.

AMEN to that statement! It truly is amazing how little control we have of our vehicle once we try to do anything other than drive!! Pay attention folks! Talking on the cell, eating or trying to deal with children in the car is a big no-no! If the situation with children is too overwhelming pull off the road to a safe place!

Ooops!
Paula Mar 31st 2008 3:56PM
Pardon me, JW, I should have said cell phone USAGE should be banned. Of course, your cell phone SITTING in your car is not going to cause a problem -- not until they teach them how to walk and talk anyway... =-/
BTW, the day you can teach a 22 yo girl to ignore her ringing cell phone, you'll probably become a multi-millionaire and can be driven around by a chaeuffer.

Old people are more dangerous on the road than young twenty somethigns. It should be mandatory to re-take a driving test when you hit 65. And when did it become ok to not use a blinker when turning? Even at 4 way stops I'm expected to read someone's mind that they're turning. I want a police-style mega phone on my car so I can yell "use your blinker" at people.
Ellen Mar 31st 2008 5:10PM
i agree about the turn signal...but keep in mind that it can happen to anyone. so please-do not just say it about the 65 year olds. we must include the frazzled soccer mom with all the kids in the car, the teenager who is driving with the speakers at full strength that he cannot "hear" the click of the turn signal...shall i go on? as for retesting those over 65-i agree with that 100% but i think we should include all drivers. everyone who wants to drive has to take a behind the wheel test every 10 years or so. there are too many people out there that have forgotten how to drive and think that they own the world. road rage, rudeness and that all encompassing entitlement attitude makes people bad drivers.
btw: was the 22 year old driver a blonde? seems like something they would do.

Well...let's see..being a middle-aged person.. in my daily commute, or while traveling in other states, what I more often than not see is a younger driver whether applying make-up, smoking or engaged in cell phone chat while blaring garbage out of their car radios... alternately speeding up and then slowing down, probably according to the intensity of the conversation and everything going on the vehicle. I've seen older drivers acting immaturely, too...like reading a newspaper while driving or not keeping up with the speed limit. But our daily police reports are filled with many more age 20ish driver violations..."assured clear distance" and "failure to yield" run rampant. I say re-test that age bracket once a year, and require a mandatory road courtesy class. Maybe if people got up a little earlier in the day, they'd have more time to get ready for whatever it is they're all rushing to and quit endangering those of us who follow the rules. Young drivers are simply too immature to deal with the "normal" grind, let alone adding all these activities while driving.

I wonder if saving her cup of Joe was worth maybe loosing her life and maybe even those of others on the road? It doesn't seem like a good trade off, no matter how good a cup of Joe it was. May be she ought to just keep a bottle of water with her. At least if you spill it, it can't hurt you or the car. Water dries and it's boiling hot when it hits your skin. I vote for only permitting bottle water in cars for the drivers. If you want flavors the water can come in flavors, too.

This is the way everyone drives in the Bay Area! What they forgot to mention was she was putting on her makeup AND getting dressed as well!
Sarah Apr 1st 2008 8:12AM
During morning "rush" hour in Chicago, you can see people reading the newspaper, shaving, painting their fingernails, and doing all sorts of other interesting things behind the wheel. Of course, nobody is really moving most of the time, so it's not really that dangerous. :)

PERSONALLY I THINK SHE SHOULD HAVE THE CELL PHONE SHOVED UP HER ARSE !EVERY DAY I SEE A WRECK CAUSED BY THESE IDIOTS WHO HAVE NOTHING REALLY TO SAY AND PUT ALL OF US IN DANGER.IT SHOULD HAVE THE SAME PENALTY AS DUI !
Jack Mar 31st 2008 5:46PM
Maybe we should ban parents from having their children in their cars also. They are VERY distracting while you are driving.
bill Mar 31st 2008 5:48PM
since she was having coffee, using her cell phone and probably putting on her makeup...who was driving the car?
