What is going on exactly? Well, I am from Austria and drive that particularly stretch of Autobahn regularly. The Seewalchen area is notorious for fog and ice related fatal accidents.
The problem is that only a small number of drivers adapt their speed to the wheather & road conditions and leave too little space between the cars. Aditionally, the Autobahn is winding between lakes and mountains so even with good visibility you have to be fully alert because behind every corner could be the end of a traffic jam.
