World's 25 dirtiest cities
When I read this headline, I was 100% sure that if Calcutta wasn't number one on this list, it would definitely make the top 5. It doesn't feature on the list at all! The list has been compiled by Forbes basis Mercer Human Resource Consulting's 2007 Health and Sanitation rankings that ranked 215 cities worldwide based on levels of air pollution, waste management, water potability, hospital services, medical supplies and the presence of infectious diseases.
Here's the top 10 World's Dirtiest Cities:
On a positive note: according to Water Aid for every $1 spent on improved sanitation, the benefit equals $9 resulting from decreased cost of health care and increased productivity -- yes, the 90/10 rule. It looks like a little bit of work and expenditure can make A LOT of difference.

AS far as aliens,in our country, something should have been done ,decades ago.In this day and age we need to shut down our borders and really tighten up on poeple coming from other nations, the us government is not doing thier job.Like the bible says as this world age comes to its end, the leaders of the nations will act like little children. If the US. government doesnt do more to protect us,sooner or later someone, somewhere will carry or launch a nucelar weapon into a heavy populated city.

Ever been to New Orleans? That city is definately no prize. I had a great time there but, I definately did not feel safe and felt as though I needed decontamination after I left. And I'm not talking post Katrina. Why don't we worry about our own backyard first...

The absolute truth is that America had completely eradicated several diseases like TB, and because of the influx of people from a lot of these countries, its back with us again !!
I do not believe that the level of personal hygiene is the same all over the World.
I am not a Racist, that just happens to be a FACT.

The third-world countries that our country has sought to bring technology, medicine, etc. for the sake of survival, has only served to bring their civilizations to the brink of extinction. As cruel as it sounds, we should just let them alone - ignore their infant mortality rate, famine, wars and pestilence. Why do women have 16 babies? Because only a small number of them survive - either in the womb or past infancy. Do we leave them to die a sad but innocent death as an unborn or infant child, or allow them to die a slow, agonizing death by starvation or disease in their early or late childhood? Leave them alone. Use the resources that we spend to make ourselves (the U.S.) appear so charitable, within our own borders to support the society that we have created over the past 230 years. It isn't selfish - it just makes sense.

This would have made more sense if it involved American cities. I doubt if very many of us are going to be in Amaty Kazakhstan or any of all the other weired places you mentiond in the near future. For instance, Chicago is a clean city where as New York was a real mess. That may be a situation that has changed since it has been a while since I was in either city. But, it would be nice to know.

This differing opinons here and the infighting is exactly what is the problem. I am an immigrant, my great grandmother did not come to this county from Italy until 1906. My family has only lived here for 102 years, yet I do not stink like they did. I remember as being a child, born in 1959, that my family stunk, with each generation learning better hygiene.
On the post that we are all immigrants except for Native Americans (Indians). this is so true, but at some point, the gates are full and our nation is full. We let too many in legally as it is, forget about illegals. However, after living on the border of El Paso, TX for 7 years, I can tell you, if I was looking across to the North, I would be climbing the fence to get here. One side you see large homes on the mountain, on the other you see a shanty town. I do not have the answers, but our country is now full, our resources are taxed so bad to water/irragation, Salmon fishing is OFF LIMITS this year on the central/northern California coast. I do not have the answers..
On diseases, anyone who does not believe these illegals are bringing TB, Hepatitis a/b/c, Miseales, Mumps and other USA irradicated diseases, do not read the World Health Reports. IT IS A FACT, the illegal population is bringing it back in and your country is lying too you. The TB EPIDEMIC is out of control and has moved as far North as Canada. Do not believe it, read the Health Reports that so many times go unpublicized on the Nightly News, to keep Hysteria down. Those are facts, I do not have the answers, but they are facts none the less.

God Is Love
Man is Flawed
Have Mercy on all of those who are in need
And forgive each and everyone for our selfish deeds
Seeing others suffer we must at least have empathy
Because if not for Gods Mercy
It could be you it could me
No matter what the color of ones skin
We all posess feelings within
Too die in hunger and always feel pain
Makes me as a person feel only shame
I hope that this has offended no one at all
God is Love
Man is Flawed
To everyone that reads this I hope that you realize that no one makes it out of this world alive and that we all will answer for all the injustices that we have endured and answer for all the injustices we had part in and to everyone as a former convict and human race hater I want too say I hope too see you all in the Heavens with our Creator and his Son Jesus Christ.

This list may or may not be comprehensive, but I am a bit amazed at your decisive comment about Calcutta. I don't know whether you have been to Calcutta or not, and was just wondering how you came to that conclusion?

Kenny - Europeans weren't 'fortunate' to have rediscovered hygiene (the Greeks and Romans, after all, had sewage and running water); they were smarter. Africa was given most of the things they needed - good farming, sewage and water, hygenic training - under colonial rule by European powers, which, however wrong you might think it, did bring sewage, sanitation, and other things to Africa. When black africans kicked out the white colonial powers, AFRICA WENT BACKWARDS. Look, for example, at AIDS, which is now a worldwide health threat and originated with black africans eating primates and engaging in extraordinaryly unhygenic sex practices. Although most African cultures official forbid it, sex between men is extemely common throughout the continent. (Please, no conspiracy nonsense like Obama's 'pastor' claiming whites developed AIDS to wipe out africans). As for the white Europeans taking over America from the inhabitants, that is NOT the equivalent of illegal aliens entering our country, producing children, and basically stealing from us. 500 years ago white europeans didn't know any better; today's illegals DO know better, and yet they consciously make the choice to come here and steal from us. Did you know that Americans are forbidden by Mexican law from holding a job in Mexico, or buying a home in Mexico? Did you know that their are several active movements, such as the Reconquista, which specifically state the intention of Mexicans to take over large swathes of North America, with at least the tacit, and sometimes active, support of the Mexican government? By the way, my tia (aunt) is Spanish, I speak, read, and write Spanish, and lived in Spain for 3 1/2 years; I love the country and the culture, so no acccusations of bias hold water. 20 million people or more stealing literally scores of millions from us is criminal, and that's just a fact.

My compliments to Hillica 41, Bill Evans, Fred, Alexandra, ken dogg and Scott G. for your most realistic comments. These 3rd world people, whether legal or illegal, have deteriorated the American Culture and have brought back numerous diseases to this Country, as a consequence of their poor education and hygiene they were(have been) exposed since birth. Anchor Babies, that is, those who cross the border illegally already pregnant, or those who after entering illegally in this Country, are those who WE pay for Hospital expenses, English classes (which they are rarely learn/understand), have taken numerous hospitals to closing/bankruptcy, for assisting those illegals in Emergency FREE, and those illegals get Food Stamps and all the government benefits. Those people know what they want when they cross the border. They will get here what they never would in their countries of origin.
I've been to Mexico City a few times, and with no exception, 10 minutes after arrival at that airport your eyes and throat start burning like fire, that's the pollution they live with. A friend of mine worked for his company in Mexico. Among other bizarre, he saw birds falling dead from trees and was told by locals that was a consequence of their polluted air. He was hospitalized for Pulmonary Disease and was later relocated to a city named Cuernavaca, about an hour drive out of Mexico City where he could breathe a little cleaner air.
Therefore, that's one of the numerous issues on that SUB-CULTURE they bring over here and want to do things their way!
To you "proud mexican", go to school first, your English is poor as your degree of literacy. And you are PROUD of WHAT ????
To you "Chris" get some literacy and education, and information as well. Read (and see if you are ABLE to understand ) the comments of those mentioned above, with realistic statistical information. And if you don't understand the word "Immigration" or the difference between the words "Legal" and "Illegal", look up in the Webster (if you know what that is). This, as well numerous other countries, is a Country of immigrants, that means L-E-G-A-L immigration. What part of that you MORON do not understand?
Try to enter or to live illegally in an European Country!

I believe that Kathmandu, Nepal would also be very high up on the list of dirty, polluted, and bad air cities.

POLLUTION TO THE OROYA CITY PERÚ
The years 2006 and 2007 the Blacksmith Institute have accomplished a research about the cities more contaminated to the world and arrived to the conclusion that the Oroya city was between the 10 cities more polluted of the world and, the environment Graffiti 2008 said that is between five more pollute too to the world and the 2008 Blacksmith Institute and Green Cross Switzerland say that Oroya is between the most polluted of the world. This qualifications are benevolents; according to my researchs to many years who I am publishing, the Oroya city is the more polluted to Peru, Latin America and of the world and every day is being more polluted: lead in blood in children in the Ancient Oroya in average 53.7 ug/dl ( DIGESA 1999); pregnancies women 39.49 ig/dl ( UNES 2000), new borns children 19.06 ug/dl, puerperal 319 ug/100 grams/placenta ( Castro 2003) and workers 50 ug/dl ( Doe Run 2003).Top lead in blood accepted 10 ug/dl; present day is 0 ug/dl ( Pediatric of Academy to USA)
When the Oroya city was in hands to the CentroMin eliminated only by the upper chimney to 167.500 meters, in average by day in tons: sulfur dioxide 1000, lead 2500, arsenic 2500, cadmium 40, particulate matter 50 and so on, more 24,000 to toxis gas product to the incomplete combustion of the coal, without count it is eliminated by industrial incinerator y by the 97 smalls chimneys, it is estimated 15,000; overall 45,000 tons for day (PAMA . El Complejo Metalúrgico de la Oroya, 1996); other research say that by this chimney only eliminate overall 119¨917,440 tons too every day to a velocity to 8.7 meters by second ( Chuquimantari C. Yauli-La Oroya MinerÃa y Ciudades Empresas Pág. 57, 1992)
Doe Run envoy every three months the concentrations of the heavy metals to the Ministry to the Energy and Mines and with the sames datums Ceverstav have demostrated the pollution was increased; for example the sulfur dioxide it have increased in near to 300 %, by increment to the production (Cederstav. La Oroya no Espera 2002
The American Association to the Environment say that the environmental quality to the Oroya it is serious deteriorated since that Doe Run was owner and the same enterprise
declared that the concentrations of the heavy metals gas is ncreased in the air: lead 1160 %, cadmium 1990 % and arsenic 6006 % (Portugal, et al. Los Humos de Doe Run 2003)

I'm living in Baku and I was very suprised when I saw my city in the first place living behind AFRICA. Its very ridiculous - Baku is a CONTEMPORARY city. I agree that becuse of oil production air and sea is polluted. But I dont thik that sanitary of Baku is pooor than that of MALI, TANZANIA, UGANDA, MADAGASKAR etc. Its actually incomperable. And some of you - Please take into consideration that that index does not show the hygine of people living in that cities. For example the AIR of Baku is polluted because of its OIL. It has nothing common with people's self-hygine! Dont confuse - Azerbaijan is not Africa!
