Photo of the Day (3/12/08)
I must be in a message kind of mood. Three weeks ago, I picked a photo with a message on the side of a building. This message snapped by Willy Volk also caught my attention. This is a view of the Golden Gate Bridge that I haven't seen before. I walked across the Golden Gate years ago, but don't recall the signs. The one thing that would be a handy thing to have included on this sign is a phone number.
The perspective here is interesting as the bridge does beckon one across to the other side. As Willy titled this, "There is hope."

I think this sign makes it both helpful and harmful since the last sentence seems to establish the fact that death is imminent and having said that, it might just make it easier for someone who really wants to commit suicide want to jump even more.

The photo doesn't show the telephones that are positioned across the bridge span -- they're directly connected to a crisis center.
About 25 people jump off the bridge each year and local authorities have consistently refused to put up a suicide barrier for aesthetic reasons.
And in response to that last comment: anyone who's made it to the GG Bridge contemplating suicide is unlikely to be *convinced* by a freaking PSA sign. Rent a film called "The Bridge" or visit San Francisco sometime, and you might get a clue.
There are so many jumpers, the local media doesn't even report GG bridge suicides.

There are phones near the signs, Jamie. Thankfully, they don't expect potential jumpers to use their rollover minutes.

I was this summer at San Francisco, and I caught a picture at the Golden Gate of another signal that saids Any person who wilfully drops or throws any objet or missile from any toll Bridge is guilty of a misdemeanor
Missiles... why not? I will post this picture on my travel blog this week, because it is not a joke.
