Husband is also AA Exec Plat as well, it's golden handcuffs: we have a few free international upgrades with them, but have to only fly on AA-operated planes to their destinations (no code shares), which is somewhat limiting. I'm going to try for AA Platinum myself this year, as the upgrades are worth it but in other ways, I want to be free to fly whatever airline I want! Loyalty pays.
