The New York Times did a story on this topic back in 2006. (See http://travel.nytimes.com/2006/11/14/business/14boarding.html )
They basically showed that airlines can't agree on the best way to do it and that some people think limiting carry-ons is the way to speed up boarding.
What surprised me is that dual jetways weren't deemed all that helpful.
