Travel tips: Don't keep your money in one place
Losing your money or your credit cards can be the most stressful of events when you are traveling; stuck in a foreign land with no cash equals no fun. Room safes fail, money belts get stolen, and you can quickly turn into an unhappy traveler. An excellent way to deal with this problem is to spread your money around; never keep it in just one place.A great article over at Hole in the Donut covers the most unusual places to stash your cash. Some of the recommendations:
-Snip a few stitches in the hem of the window drapes and slip some bills into the fabric.
-Carry duct tape with you so that you can put some money in a plastic bag and tape it under your dresser... or even the toilet tank.
-If you have a shower in your hotel or hostel room, take down the curtain rod and hide some cash in inside the hollow tube.
The most creative is of course the Brief Safe, a pair pf pre-dirtied men's underwear that have a secret pocket where you can put some bills or other small valuables. You can buy a pair or even build your own thanks to Justin's DIY project.

What if you wear a money belt religiously, with a day's worth of cash in your pocket for easy access? Any money that's not on my person feels very insecure. Then there's the issue of credit/debit cards, which you're only going to have a couple of, so it becomes harder to split them up.
But the point that really nags me is this: if you don't want to put a bunch of money in a particular place because it wouldn't be safe, why put any there at all? (With the exception of the aforementioned day cash in your pocket so you don't have to rummage for every transaction.)

I think that the point is not to carry too much cash on you. When I travel I only keep a day's worth on me. But I tend to keep a few bills stashed in other places for emergency use, which is what I think these tips are for.

When I talked to someone in Brazil recently there had been a number of tourists who had been robbed. The problem was not just that they did not distribute their money. The problem was for some reason some tourists are carrying around $1000 in cash. I don't understand that behavior. I am with Anna. Just don't carry so much cash.
