National Geo has a story this month on animal cognition, which goes beyond what they can imitate to what they can understand. It tells about Alex the gray parrot who could count, identify shapes and sizes, and even invent words when introduced to something new, like calling an apple a "banerry," a mashup of banana and cherry:
