Reaction Engines' A2 supersonic jet: Europe to Australia at 4,000 mph
Very cool -- but 25 years? That's a long time. Who will want to fly in a plane when we have the technology to step into a telephone booth and dial up any place and time in the world and be there in seconds, complete with some gaudy-looking CG depicting wormholes and such? Not me.

I'm figuring this is a joke. You can go that fast, or you can travel 10,000 mi, but you don't do both, which is probably why they say it will take 25 years (aka forever). In the meantime, just send $ and they'll work on the idea.

Would you still have to get to the Airport two hours early??????

Super! By 2030 I would envision the design of a sub-orbiter carrying 400 passengers. It will have a fuel cell rocket boost engine that drops off after attaining orbit speed and altitude. A cluster of rocket engines aft will provide 20 minutes of thrust for landing approach. Other than the few minutes of take-off and landing, it will be a very quiet, pleasant, and weightless flight. But, travelling public will need 2 years before the first flight to be convinced that sub-orbital flight is safe. Actually, it is the future of continental travel and not very far ahead. Bill

Hohum, all well and good, but just the same the world is quibbling about fuel consumption now. They even want us here in the U.S. to stop using incandescent light bulbs and have us use bulbs with mercury which can be a hazard to our health. Why don't we just use bicycles and vacation within their range? What need do any of us have to fly to all these foreign places? Why not see the USA? Can any one of you tell me you have seen everything there is to see here in the USA?
