I was just in NO for an academic conference and very few panels, of the hundreds listed, addressed issues related to Hurricane Katrina. I was "fortunate" enough to have a friend who drove me by Tent City, and I just felt really disillusioned about the conference - much of us believe in social action, and here we were at the conference hotel, give papers on social action in a city that needs it so badly, and we never even had to see the devastation because of the direct paths we took from the airport to the hotel.
