Despite the airport being a bit of a nightmare, I think London's a good place for an English speaker to begin a European trip. Defer the language barrier for a few days until you get used to being away from home...

Using a map IS a great idea. I used this method to plan my route after I left Peace Corps, and it was really helpful. Plus, it's important to know *where stuff in the world is*.
Packing light is also key. You can buy almost anything you need almost anywhere (except for maybe medicine or camera equipment). Once I traveled through Central Africa for a week with just a small plastic grocery bag.
