A country you've never heard of (continued)
Here's a bit more about Nauru, the third smallest country in the world, for readers who were intrigued by my post from last week on it.Curiously, there are plenty of immigrants who've made it to Nauru (of all places!). Australians work as doctors and engineers, the Chinese run the restaurants and shops, and Polynesian immigrants hold the rest of the jobs. In total, 4,000 out of the 12,000 inhabitants are foreigners. That was fine when phosphate paid the locals' bills. But now nine in ten natives are overweight and unemployed. One in two has diabetes. And one in three kids have never received any schooling; those who do well in academics inevitably leave the country. Perhaps it's no wonder that the most popular event of the past few years was a "Big is Beautiful" beauty pageant. Aside from that, the most popular pastime seems to be driving around the island's eleven miles of roads drinking beers.
Ironically, when a British captain discovered the place in 1798, he named it "Pleasant Island". Over the next 150 years, Westerners decimated the local population through disease, civil war (they gave firearms to the twelve local clans and encouraged them to kill each other), colonization, and of course, phosphate mining. By the end of World War II, there were only 600 Nauruans left and two-thirds of the phosphate was already gone. But with independence in 1968, the government lavished money on everyone, along with luxuries like three television channels, a golf course, and free health care. In the 1990s, all that disappeared along with the phosphate.
But there's also plenty of rich history here, in particular, the legacy of environmental exploitation and how that has led to their plight today. While their neighbors have adjusted to globalization, Nauruans are still trying to make something out of their eight-square-mile speck of land.

Could not agree with you more "wishiwacanadian". Its so sad that this administration has robbed us of our pride for our Country, because of thier hypocrite, greedy ways.... Hopefully a change is near, but it will take years to recover from the "Bush" years, if ever, but with hope we can survive. :)

This is insane. An article on the 3rd-smallest country in the world opens up a frenzied U.S./anti-U.S. orgy of shrill e-mail messages. Forget proud to be an American. I'm wondering if I should be proud to be human.

In 1999 I had the unique experience of spending a month as part of a scientific expedition on and anchored off the island of Nauru. Here is my daily diary for those of you who want to be intrigued by more facts and photos of this unique island.

Are you dense Gina Price (unless you are not talking about the US)? This whole thing does not ever mention someone from the US doing anything there! It says Australians went there, Chinese, Polynesians, and Brittish, but no where does it mention the US. Please, find hooked on phonics, it may help!

After some thought, I must admit I'm on a bit of a tirade. What really needs to be discussed is how to help these people. I've listened to the NPR broadcast and I feel so terrible for them. The Nauruans are impoverished and desolate. The US did get into talks to help solidify and revive their nation, but at a cost that ended up leaving them suing the US.
Sometimes we should just help another out simply because it's the right thing to do.

Freedom of speech is a wonderful gift, it's just a shame that those who exercise it the most have so little to say. A small amount or reading prior to opening your mouth or hitting the keyboard could keep your feet out of your mouth.
In the words of Ronald Reagan:
"The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant: It's just that they know so much that isn't so."

It wasn't America which was responsible for this!!! It happened
under British/Australian/New Zealand administration!!!

Shows what happens when you give everybody everything for free, without expecting them to work for it. Sounds kind of like the Democrat philosophy of government that has already wrecked the USA.
tomguy Jan 5th 2008 1:03AM
Hey Eric...you want to know what has 'wrecked' the US of A? The Republican Party! And the war criminal, lying coward George W. Bush. Want proof? Just compare virtually any aspect of life in the US...economic, educational, political influence/power in the international arena, income distribution, anything/everything between now and the pre-Bushboy and you will see what a unmitigated disaster the GOP and Bush Admin has been for this country and the American People. But you probably don't give a rodent's behind...people like you only care about your own perverted political agenda...right wing reactionaries one and all. Well thanks for doing what no foreign enemy every accomplished..bringing this great nation to it's knees. Hope you're satisfied.

Another interesting bit of trivia about Nauru.
THe national language of Nauru is Nauruan. Nauru is the only nation in the world whose official national language (Nauruan) is also a palindrome (spelled the same forwards and backwards).
Malayalam is a language which is spoken it parts of India, but it is not the national language of India. Malayalam is also a palindrome.

Ms. Price has what we commonly call rectalvitis, it is because she has her head in a place where the sun does not shine. I've heard of this place several times, I once saw the typical liberal biased TV expose on it, how terrible the Aussies are etc. typical left wing loon crap. People the world over, some of them, have what is known as the welfare mentality,I'm here so the taxpayers should give me what I want.

Hey, wishiwascanadian
I wish you were canadian as well. You definitely are not worthy of being called an American. The cynics and dissenters cry that the "American Dream" is dead, They Lie!! It is people like you though that threaten it. Go to Canada if you want they need all the people they can get because it is not a desired location. fortunately with you gone I will LOVE the USA even more.
Sign me a PROUD AMERICAN

That Brithish captain may have "learned" of Nauru and tha Nauruans, but he didn't "discover" them.
Iris Fields Jan 4th 2008 3:04PM
Actually Tomguy,
It bothered me that my NYU student daughter was 2 blocks away from the Towers when they were brought down, and she had to step over body parts to walk to mid-town in her pj's with no ID, and couldn't get back to her place for 6 weeks. It bothered me that 3,000 Americans were murded that day. It also bothers me that people like you so easily forgot that day and haven't noticed that there has not been one attack since 9/11 even though there has been many attempts.
And please.... I voted for Bill Clinton both times... so don't give me any of your pathetic educated by the liberal press judgements.... Why not actually start searching for the truth, I did.

IT'S SAD WHAT PEOPLE DO TO EACH OTHER NO MATTER WHERE WE LIVE...FREEDOM IS RELITIVE EVEN IN A WONDERFUL COUNTRY..WHERE THIS RIGHT IS PROMOTED...CRIME AND MEANNESS OF EVERY SORT GOES ON...THAT DIPS INTO OUR FREEDOM IN A BIG WAY...COWARDS EXIST ON EVERY LEVEL....... AND OF COURSE THESE GOOD PEOPLE NEEDED HELP TO SURVIVE WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO THEM...MAYBE AMERICA COULD HAVE...SHOULD HAVE HELPED...THE VATICAN THE SMALLEST COUNTRY...VERY INTERESTING
Feign Jan 4th 2008 6:15PM
The Vatican has tons of money...did they help? Why is the USA responsible for every screwed up country in he world? It is plainly obvious, except to Gina and her motley crew, that we were and ARE not responsible for their woes. How about we end the war before we send help to an island full of obese people? Send them a few trainers and some running shoes, and don't they have any handicrafts they can market? Teach a man to fish.....remember that old saying? Whether or not we are responsible is moot in my book. Help them if you want, but don't create another welfare subsidized society.
