I hope your friend decides to heed your advice. I've traveled solo before and it's true, the freedom of having no one else to answer to allows for more spontaneity than usual "Sure, let's just stay on the train and continue to Interlaken".
Furthermore, when traveling alone, I'm impelled to engage in random conversations with fellow travelers, which has always proven to be enlightening "What? Nodding "yes" (North-American-style) doesn't actually mean "yes" in other cultures?"
