Photo of the Day (12/6/07)
.jpg)
Today's Photo of the Day comes to us from North Korea--site of my most recent vacation. And yes, I've nominated one of my own photographs for today's honor.
I personally find this photograph interesting because I was naturally concerned that there would be very little food for us to eat in North Korea. I was wrong. Although the general population might be suffering from malnutrition, the government has made sure that tourists have access to all the food they need. And, it's often presented in the quaint style featured above. Just don't ask me what it was. Other than rice, bean curds, and kimchi, I rarely knew what I was putting in my mouth; but I suppose I was fortunate enough to be putting anything in there to begin with.
Today also kicks off a new travel feature here on Gadling, Infiltrating North Korea. If you've ever wondered what the Hermit Kingdom is like, be sure to check it out.

Wow - that's a feast even by Japanese standards!
Needless to say, I'm very envious of your travels - keep these posts coming!

Beautiful shot, Neil. Now, why is all the food gathered together on one table? Are these condiments? Is this ALL for the person who is seated? Are those yellow crecents fruit or potatoes. I recognize hard boiled eggs and I love that dark green stuff. It's my favorite vegetable. What is it called anyway?

Jamie, for the most part, I had no idea what i was putting in my mouth. Sometimes it was hot, cold, spicy, tasteless, or gross.
The photo above was our main course for lunch one day. This is actually two portions. if you look closely, all the bowls duplicate on the other side of the table.

I saw the duplicates before. Interesting arrangement of bowls. Mirror images of each other. Is this a set meal? Did the waiter just keep bringing out food. Interesting that the exact items are in two bowls instead of one larger bowl--unless you ordered separately.
Of the dishes pictured, which did you like the best?

That looks so yummy. I'm calling for a Vegan in North Korea series! Travel restrictions, food shortages, and what would happen?

Great shot. So typical of what you see in Korean restaurants...whether they are in the South or North (as this photo proves.) It's too bad the average North Korean cannot look forward to this feast on a daily basis.
