Thanks for all the advice. I had been wondering if I was doing to right thing buying my ticket as early as possible when I saw a decent fare and I was right! I just got my flight home from Italy for Christmas for $775 inclusive with only one stop each way before I reach my home airport. The funny thing is the base fare was similar or even a little higher than other flights but the taxes and mysterious fees were way less - on most other flights these fees were doubling the original cost of the ticket.
