European tribalism never ceases to amaze me. The desire for a small group to live split apart in as small a country as possible without any others different from them is hard to understand for Americans. After all, we fought a Civil War to get over the "My loyalty lies with Virginia"* attitude that characterized the country until that war.
* Robert E. Lee, after he declined the offer to command the Union Forces.
