Whenever I'm traveling during the holiday season (or really nowadays whenever I'm just traveling by air, regardless of the time of year), I actually try to show up a couple of hours early for the flight, rather than just on time.
I guess it depends on how thorough the company representatives and airport security plans to be during the holidays, but if you show up really early (say at least two hours before the flight is due to depart), then sometimes you get lucky and are able to get through and to the flight waiting area without much hassle.
It just depends on which evil you'd prefer; waiting extra in the departure area or waiting extra in line ;)
